BWW Preview: Upcoming Productions in Belgium

What's up Flanders?

Even though the cultural season in Flanders, Belgium, has just a few months left, there are still productions to look forward to this spring and summer.

Marmalade's massive production of Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' which played in Ghent last December, moves to Hasselt for a handful of shows in April. Besides a talented cast, the show features real rain, fountains, a sinking boat and gigantic LED-screen... Unfortunately this seems to have left no budget for a live orchestra. All the music is prerecorded.

On a smaller scale 'Je m'appelle Jacques Brel' is a tribute to Belgium's finest chansonnier/composer; Jacques Brel. 40 years after his death Music Hall produces a tribute led by Filip Jordens. It's advertised as a multi-media production with live music by the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra. The production opens May 13th in Antwerp.

The 'Rocky Horror Show' directed by Stany Crets will play in Ghent in July. Produced by newcomer 'Deep Bridge', Richard O'Brien's rock musical had a successful run in Antwerp and even played an XXL version for more than 3000 people in Lotto Arena. First night in Ghent is on July 13th.

Rubens is one of Flanders best-known baroque painters. 400 years after his death the artist is the subject of an open-air musical-spectacle at the Merode castle. 100 extras and a live orchestra support the professional cast. Against the spectacular backdrop of the Merode castle in Westerlo 'Rubens, the musical', opens on August 17th.

In Brussels Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Sunset Boulevard' will have its first French language production. Part of the summer festival 'Bruxellons', the open-air production stars musical diva Annemie Gils as Norma Desmond and Gaétan Borg as Joe Gillis. Jack Cooper and Simon Paco direct the show. Opening night is July 9th.
