Atlanta's nationally acclaimed ALLIANCE THEATRE will be opening its 2011/2012 season on September 7, 2011 with INTO THE WOODS, book by James Lapine, with music and lyrics by Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim.

An opening night gala will be held on September 10, 2011, honoring the tenth anniversary of Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz, Jr. Artistic Director, who will direct the Tony Award®-winning musical.

In a unique collaboration with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Atlanta Federation of Musicians, this production utilizes non-professional high school musicians from metropolitan Atlanta high schools.

The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales with the haunting question of what happens next when you get what you wish for. With decidedly adult implications, INTO THE WOODS allows you to return to a world where magic beans create a ladder to the sky, Prince Charming is one golden slipper away, and wishes still come true. Filled with soaring melodies by the master of modern American musical theatre, INTO THE WOODS is a spellbinding musical filled with romance, magic and the unexpected consequences of dreams come true.

"The work is a smart and deeply ironic deconstruction of the classic fairytales that we tell our children and the lessons that we try to teach them, resulting in a piece that asks the haunting question: do we live what we teach or are we teaching what we live?" said Booth.

Performances are Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Aug. 31 - Oct. 2, 2011 on the Alliance Stage. There will not be a matinee performance on Saturday, Sep. 3.
