Sony Classical and Really Useful Records will release the original soundtrack recording of music from director Joel Schumacher's film of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, featuring one of the most popular musical theater scores of all time plus a new end-title song written especially for the film, Learn To Be Lonely," performed by singer/actress Minnie Driver, who also appears in the film. Produced by Really Useful Films and released by Warner Bros. Pictures, The Phantom of the Opera - starring Scottish actor Gerard Butler in the title role and introducing Emmy Rossum as Christine, with Tony and Emmy nominee Patrick Wilson - opens nationwide Christmas 2004. The original soundtrack recording will be released on Tuesday, November 23, 2004. Sony Classical will release the soundtrack recording of The Phantom of the Opera in two versions. The single-disc original soundtrack recording features all the key numbers from the score, including the new end-title song by Lloyd Webber and lyricist Charles Hart. A deluxe, specially priced two-disc version will include all of the music from the film in a collector's edition package. The score has also been translated and recorded in French, Italian, Spanish and German, and the soundtrack will be released internationally in those languages.

Sales of the original cast recording of the stage production of The Phantom of the Opera have surpassed 24 million units worldwide. As theatrical productions of the show continue to run around the world - including those on Broadway and in London's West End - the film version will be the first major musical to hit the screen since the Oscar-winning triumph of Chicago in 2002. With a hit-laden score that includes such enduring favorites as "Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Think of Me," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" and the title song, The Phantom of the Opera is sure to be one of the hits of the holiday film season.

The film version of The Phantom of the Opera is directed by Joel Schumacher (Batman & Robin, A Time to Kill, Batman Forever, St. Elmo's Fire). Gerard Butler (Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life: Tomb Raider II, Timeline, Reign of Fire) plays the Phantom, and the film introduces 18-year-old Emmy Rossum (Mystic River, Day After Tomorrow) in the role of Christine Daae. A Tony nominee on Broadway for his performances in The Full Monty and Oklahoma!, Patrick Wilson (The Alamo, Angels in America) plays Raoul. The cast also includes Oscar nominees Minnie Driver and Miranda Richardson, as well as Ciar‡n Hinds and Simon Callow.

Also working on the soundtrack recording are Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-time creative collaborators, co-producer Nigel Wright and conductor and music supervisor Simon Lee. This highly talented team has brought together more than 100 hand-picked musicians from all over Europe for the recording sessions at London's famous Abbey Road Studios.
