The Artistic Home to Open WATCH ON THE RHINE, 10/5

Kicking off the Artistic Home's 14th season will be Lillian Hellman's 1941 New York Drama Critic's Circle award-winner Watch on the Rhine.

In this inspirational play, Hellman presents a pre-World War II America with a call to action aimed directly at the heart of the family. What at first appears to be a charming drawing room comedy quickly turns to mystery and international intrigue. Family ties are tested, politics are questioned and one man steps out from safety to make the ultimate sacrifice. In Watch on the Rhine, Hellman challenges us to examine our own complacency in the face of world events, even when the atrocities occur an ocean away.

Opening October 5 and running through November 16, Watch on the Rhine will be directed by Cody Estle and features Artistic Home artistic director Kathy Scambiatterra and ensemble member Kristin Collins. They will be joined by guest artists Scot West, Tiffany Bedwell, Josh Volkers, John Stokvis, Lorraine Freund, Brandon Boler, Declan Collins, Elodie Tougne and Liam Dahlborn.

Scenic design will be by Jeff Kmiek, lighting design by Garvin Jellison, sound design by Adam Smith, costume design by Lauren Roark, prop design and set dressing by Mary O'Dowd and fight choreography by Sam Hubbard. Jack Bourgeois will serve as assistant director.

All performances will take place at The Artistic Home 45-seat, which is located at 1376 W. Grand.

The Artistic Home is an Equity theatre company noted for their innovative and intimate presentations of rarely-produced classics as well developing new works. Audiences may know The Artistic Home best from their recent Jeff-recommended productions of Les Parents Terrible, Beaten, The Goddess and A Touch of the Poet or the 2011 Jeff Award-nominated Sweet Bird of Youth. Other Artistic Home productions include the Jeff-Award-winning production of Juno and the Paycock, which also received three After Dark

Awards, the Jeff-Nominated The Tallest Man, Landscape of the Body, Natural Affection, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, After the Fall and Peer Gynt (which also received an After Dark award for Direction).

For more than 13 years, The Artistic Home has consistently produced compelling theatre in Chicago. Starting as an ensemble of thirteen actors, the company has evolved into a group of thirty actors, directors and artistic associates, collaborating to bring timeless stories of human emotion to the Chicago community. First formed in 1998 with the belief that the actor is at the heart of great theater, the company strives to give birth to unforgettable moments; to touch audiences who are increasingly distanced from human contact; to readdress the classics and explore new works with passion.
