THE OTHER MOZART to Play Uptown Gallery, 8/22-31
In a world still unequal in opportunities for women, it is necessary to hear and understand stories such as Nannerl's. The primary view of history is dominated by great men like Amadeus Mozart and Shakespeare, and most female composers (and writers, scientists, philosophers, etc.) from the past have been forgotten, their work lost or gathering dust in libraries. To bring this other Mozart to people's minds is to inspire them, and it brings women into the history of the great.
Nannerl, played in Kingston by Sara Florence Fellini, tells her story at last in this monodrama by Sylvia Milo, directed by Isaac Byrne with period choreography by Janice Orlandi, and set in and around a sweeping 18-foot dress (designed by Magdalena Dabrowska from the National Theater of Poland), and amidst the Enlightenment and a climate of great social change that still resonates today. With a script meticulously sculpted from the Mozart family's humorous and heartbreaking letters, THE OTHER MOZART features an original score by Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen (of Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival and the International Contemporary Ensemble) using clavichords, music boxes, teacups, and fans.
