The Subjective Theater Company is proud to announce its only play of the 2009 season, PARALLAX - a fantastical exploration of narrative and memory.
While covering a labor movement in Argentina, Associated Press agents PJ and Mick find themselves in the middle of a shoot-out that leaves their friend and contact dead. As PJ spirals into alcoholism, and Mick submerges himself into the book he is writing, the question of what really happens remains unanswered. Sliding between memory, reenactment, narration, and reality, Parallax explores how and we construct narratives, both in our lives, and as a society.

PARALLAX is the product of The Subjective Theatre Company's (STC) CoLab series. CoLab is a wing of STC in which the actors collaboratively work with a head writer (Julia Holleman) to build a show from its concept to its final staging. PARALLAX is STC's third CoLab project. STC stumbled upon this process organically during the development of PARTY DICIPLINE and decided to repeat the process to create the wildly successful, TELL.
What is Parallax?

4. The apparent shift of an object against a background due to a change in observer position.

SUBJECTIVE THEATRE COMPANY (Artistic Director, Jesse Cameron Alick)

Zachary R. Mannheimer founded the Subjective Theatre Company in 2001 with the mission to produce a wide range of politically and socially relevant theatre FOR FREE. STC is founded on the principles that art is not a commodity, that culture should be without class structures, that art is without boundaries, and that theatre should always be available to everyone. STC is guided by a philosophy of accessibility and the belief that theatre plays a vital role in the development of individuals and communities. STC is dedicated to cultivating an environment where quality theatre can exist for people of every economic and social background.
STC has a track record of promoting collaboration and accessibility by running events like The Busking Bonanza (a program that organized free previews in New York City Parks, of plays that various theatre companies were producing), World Play Day (which re-opened the East River Amphitheater to the public), and The UNconvention (a theatre festival that took place during the Republican National Convention in New York in 2004). In 2004, STC also founded The Community Dish, which is an organization that brings the various theatre companies in the independent theatre community together to share resources, network and learn about each other.

In 2007 Jesse Cameron Alick took over the mantel of STC in New York while Zachary Mannheimer went out On The Road to explore the American theatre landscape, eventually founding a new branch of the company in Iowa and founded the Des Moines Social Club. Whether through our readings, productions of both new and established plays, or through the work that comes out of our CoLab series, or our original movie production wing, STC-Films, we focus on producing art that challenges and entertains while inspiring creativity and social responsibility.
