The Savannah Summer Theatre Institute announced an unprecedented decision today to switch its annual production from the much advertised Steampunk'd of Into the Woods to the premiere of the revamped, national tour version of The Addams Family.

Program director Benjamin Wolfe commented on the switch: "This decision is obviously not one made lightly. 'Addams' was the top choice in our audience survey for Summer 2014 and the rights simply weren't available due to the ongoing national tour. However, with the tour recently announcing an end date, we were given this chance to license. And we jumped on it."

The National Tour version of the production has four new songs and a brand new ending that centers more on the family, and removes what Wolfe calls "the giant squid ending."

The Savannah Summer Theatre Institute conducts a strenuous musical theatre intensive each summer that immerses high school students in an intense rehearsal period followed by a week of guest artist workshops. Created to show high school students how a professional rehearsal process is run, the students put together a full production in three weeks thatcumulates with two weekends of performances.

Into the Woods isn't off SSTI's radar. Wolfe says "I am in love with the production designs that had been drafted for this unique production. This is not a cancellation of that production. It is a postponement. Those plans have been neatly tucked away for a future summer, quite possibly 2015."

SSTI gives students the opportunity to learn and grown in a fast paced environment with luxury housing, packed audiences, and small cast sizes. Cast members also have the opportunity to work with stars of the Broadway stage. The program is highly competitive, with acceptance rates dictated by production size. In 2013, SSTI welcomed students from 9 states and 3 countries for RENT. Early application is recommended.

Applications are currently being accepted on SSTI's website at www.SavannahSummerTheatre.com.
