RAICES' Voces Latinas reading series will continue on March 17th, 2013 with La Luz De Un Cigarillo: A Dominican-York Play, written by Latino playwright Marco Antonio Rodriguez and directed by WNY actor Rolando Martín Gómez. The reading will be at 6 PM at the Road Less Traveled Theater. Reading will starr Mariana Cole-Rivera, Smirna Mercedes-Pérez, Victoria Pérez, Josué Rosario-Cáliz, and narrated by Ingrid Cordova.

La Luz De Un Cigarillo is written in (and will be read in) Spanish and Spanglish; the play follows the tense relationship between a middle-aged Dominican mother, Luz, and her twentysomething son, Julio César, who has reluctantly returned home after five years to attend his father's funeral. The story unfolds over the course of two evenings, as these two estranged generations of Dominicans living in mid-town Manhattan attempt to rekindle love and appreciation for each other and their roots... but unexpectedly reveal intimate and taboo secrets which threaten to destroy an already thin bond.

An Off-Broadway hit, La Luz De Un Cigarrillo is the winner of 5 HOLA and 4 ACE awards in New York (including Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting and Best Director: Drama); RAICES Artistic Director Victoria Perez says, "In La Luz, we get to experience my favorite theme when it comes to love and that is unconditional love. All of the characters in this play express it in one way or another and that to me is family."

Playwright Rodriguez has a special connection to Buffalo; he and director Gómez are both Alumni of Buffalo State College Performing Arts Department. "It is a pleasure to be entrusted by RAICES and Victoria Pérez with this gem of a Latino play," said Gomez.

All VOCES LATINAS readings take place on Sundays at 6pm at the Road Less Traveled Theater, inside the Market Arcade Film & Arts Center. Following the reading, the cast will join the audience for a Q&A. Admission is a suggested donation of $5.00.
