R.Evolución Latina concluded its 7th Annual "Dare to Go Beyond" Children's Performing Arts Camp on Friday, August 1st, with an outdoors cultural celebration held at Jackie Robinson Park. Scroll down for photos!
Rickey Tripp (Motown), Rebecca Larkin (Avenue Q), Luis Salgado (In The Heights, Women on the Verge, Rocky) and Gabriela Garcia(Chicago), were among the Broadway performers who took part in the all-day event. Adú Proyecto Universal Dance Company and percussionistToño Vilchez, from Lima, Peru, gave a special performance.
"We had a memorable day", said actor, director and choreographer Luis Salgado, Executive Director of R.Evolución Latina, a not-for-profit organization affiliated with Broadway Cares. "Closing our Camp with a cultural celebration open for everyone was the perfect way to end a life-transforming week for campers and volunteer educators, while bringing the arts directly into local neighborhoods".
The Annual D2GB Children's Performing Arts Camp is a week-long educational program hosted by RL. The only free and bilingual Broadway summer camp in New York, it is possible through the generosity of the Herman Goldman Foundation, with additional support by Broadway Cares, Harper Collins, Trader Joe's NYC Grow and Starlight Deli. Over 250 campers ages 7-17, and more than 25 volunteer teaching artists participated.
Teaching artists in 2014 included Antuan Raimone (In The Heights, Radio City Christmas Spectacular), Blanca Camacho (In The Heights), Carlos Gonzalez (Fuerza Bruta), Derric Harris (A Free Man of Color), Dionne Figgins (Memphis, MOTOWN), Elasea Douglas (FELA), Gabrielle Ruiz (In The Heights, Piece of My Heart), Greer Gisy (In The Heights -2nd Nat'l), James Harkness (Beautiful), Jon Rua (In The Heights, Hands on a Hardbody), Jose Restrepo (Peter and the Star Catcher), Kevin Del Aguila (ROCKY), Liz Ramos (The Addams Family), Marcus Paul James (MOTOWN), Michael Midlin (Aladdin), Michelle Aravena, (ROCKY), Okieriete Onaodowan (ROCKY), Rebecca Larkin (Avenue Q), Rickey Tripp (In The Heights, MOTOWN), Rosie Lani Fiedelman (In the Heights, The Lion King), Sara Shepard (Beautiful), Stephanie Klemons (If/Then, In The Heights), Valeria Cossu (Mayumana)Valerie Salgado (SMASH), Vasthy Mompoint (ROCKY), Vince Oddo (ROCKY), Voltaire Wade-Green (SMASH), Maria Peyramaure (Big Apple Circus), Dr. Drum & Bomba-Yo, Gabriela Garcia (CHICAGO), and Luis Salgado (In The Heights, ROCKY).
Special guests artists kicked off classes each morning with an inspirational talk and Q&A, including Bianca Marroquín (Chicago), Courtney Reed (Aladdin) and Andy Karl (Rocky). During the Camp's closing celebration, the campers also took to the stage. Jackie Robinson Park is located on Bradhurst Avenue, at W. 145th Street.
The D2GB Children's Performing Arts Camp is one of six successful arts-in-education programs run by RL, which was founded in 2008 by Luis Salgado, Gabriela Garcia and Michael Balderrama (In The Heights, Ghost).
