Everyday Inferno Theatre Company is thrilled to offer a first look inside rehearsals for Iphigenia Among the Taurians (part of the 20th annual New York International Fringe Festival). The free outdoor production, directed by Anaïs Koivisto and produced by Katherine Sommer, is a world premiere adaptation of Euripides' powerful and thought-provoking finale to the famed House of Atreus cycle. This rarely performed Greek tragicomedy is bolstered by buoyant contemporary language and... a-cappella pop music. Check out a first look at rehearsals below!
In a strange land, where foreign visitors are sentenced to death, a group of captive women dream of escape, revenge, and the homes they left behind. Saved from sacri?ce by the goddess Artemis, Iphigenia serves as priestess in the temple at Tauris. Orestes, the last son of the House of Atreus, arrives on their shore on a doomed mission. What threads hold these desperate individuals together? Only the Gods know for sure. Led by mighty female characters, and infused with unexpected humor and warmth, Iphigenia Among the Taurians is a story of forgiveness, the unbreakable bonds of family, and the power of love over even the most potent grief.Director Anaïs Koivisto says: "There's never been a better time for a production of Iphigenia Among the Taurians - a modern fantasy that approaches the subjects of violence, religion, and isolationism with distinctly contemporary complexity, ambiguity, and humor. This is a play that asks the exact questions we are all asking ourselves right now: how do we fight for change in a society built on violence? How do we move forward? How do we become better?"
Everyday Inferno Theatre Company creates adventurous theatrical productions of new or rarely produced texts with a focus on telling women's stories in a unique, entertaining, and accessible manner. We embrace and exceed the limitations of low-budget theatre, exploring nontraditional spaces, stagecraft, and storytelling. We are committed to developing a diverse audience by producing work that is large in scope while keeping our production costs (and ticket prices) at a minimum. Through our work, we prove that stories focused on women can be universally enjoyable and relatable.
