Met Museum to Open Labor Day With Met Holiday Monday On Sept 5

On Labor Day, September 5-the next in the series of Met Holiday Mondays-a selection of special exhibitions, Permanent Collection galleries, and amenities will be open to the public at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Met Holiday Mondays are extra public viewing days that take place on the Mondays of major holiday weeks and weekends, when historically the Museum has been closed. The three popular exhibitions that will be featured this Labor Day are: Frans Hals in the Metropolitan Museum, Anthony Caro on the Roof (weather permitting), and The 9/11 Peace Story Quilt.

Included in Frans Hals in the Metropolitan Museum are 13 paintings by the celebrated Dutch artist Frans Hals (1582/83-1666), whose portraits and genre scenes were famous in his lifetime for their immediacy and dazzling brushwork (on view through October 10). Anthony Caro on the Roof features large-scale sculptures by the renowned and influential British artist (b. 1924) in the Museum's Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, a dramatic open-air space that also offers unparalleled views of Central Park and the New York City skyline (weather permitting, through October 30). Displayed in the Museum's Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education, The 9/11 Peace Story Quilt comprises three quilt panels-each having the theme of peace-that were designed by contemporary artist Faith Ringgold and constructed in collaboration with New York City elementary and high school students (through January 22).

Rafferty, President of the Metropolitan Museum, commented: "For many of us, Labor Day serves as the unofficial end to summer, and a final opportunity to enjoy a long weekend with family and friends before the busy fall season begins. We hope that people who are spending their Labor Day in New York City will add a visit to the Met to their schedule. When we make time to view and contemplate fine art, our perspective is broadened, our souls are nourished, and our lives are enhanced."

Charles H. Tally Holiday Monday Family Programs specially organized for Labor Day include discussion and sketching activities that will be available for families with children ages 5 through 12 at 11 a.m., noon, 1:15 and 2:30 p.m. These programs are free with Museum admission.

The Metropolitan's public cafés and restaurants, and several of the Museum gift shops in the Main Building will be open.

The next Met Holiday Monday will be on Columbus Day (October 10), when a different selection of exhibitions and galleries will be open.
