Composer/lyricist Marc Shaiman took a drive to Rahway, New Jersey Tuesday evening to do a Q&A with the cast of the Vanguard Theatre Company's production of Hairspray.

As he posts on his Facebook page, "After loving on Jenifer Lewis in the gal's dressing room, telling the girls Jenifer owns the role, their Motormouth (Arlinda Harris) gave me just a taste of her own 'I Know...'"

As you can tell from his reaction, the author was quite impressed.

Cause I'm such a nice guy, I drove out to Rahway NJ (the town where my dad worked his whole life) to do a Q&A with the cast of Vanguard Theater Company's production of HAIRSPRAY. After loving on Jenifer Lewis in the gal's dressing room, telling the girls Jenifer owns the role, their Motormouth (Arlinda Harris) gave me just a taste of her own "I KNOW..". As you can hear, this cast is singing their asses off (please pardon the fact that I look like a hobo, I had no hot water to shave this morning. I have no excuse for the size of my cheeks and chins).

On August 15th, 2002, Hairspray opened at the Neil Simon Theatre, where it ran for 2642 performances. Hairspray is a musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O'Donnell andThomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.
