Mozart and Salieri

Part of the Midtown International Theatre Festival
The WORKSHOP'S MAIN STAGE & JEWEL BOX
312 West 36TH STREET, NYC

MOZART AND SALIERI by Alexander Pushkin, directed by Igor Jarovinsky and Roland Udvari. A classical drama with operatic elements, based on the same play that inspired Peter Shaffer's Amadeus. This fictional - yet possible - final encounter between the two masters of 18th century classical music follows the apocryphal legend that Antonio Salieri poisoned Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart out of jealousy over the latter's music. The original one-act opera by Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov uses Alexander Pushkin's drama almost verbatim in its entirety, and incorporates quotations from Mozart's Requiem and Don Giovanni into the score. The opera was translated into English for the 1981 New York premiere by Thadeus Motyka and Harlow Robinson.

With re-imagined directions, this new production creates a dramatic amalgam of both the musical and the dramatic work, by blending together the elements of opera and prose.

While the skyline currently glitters with theatre festivals, there was a time when the Midtown International Theatre Festival was one of only two! John Chatterton has helped set the gold standard for presenting new and exciting independent theatrical works in New York. This year - with a booming variety section, a prominently-placed Short Play Lab, a burgeoning Short Film Lab, nearly 60 productions - with a record number of musical presentations (including an opera) - as well as an astounding number of international works, the 17th Annual Midtown International Theatre Festival once again proves itself to be one of the best reasons to stay in New York in July!
