Harvey Fierstein, whose donning a dress as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray led to Tony Award, is developing a new sitcom for the Fox Network.

The show would be a collaboration with writer David Richardson, who stated that the sitcom will feature Fierstein as a blue-collar mother. "It will be 'Roseanne'-ish in nature, a real woman raising two kids. There won't be any winking at the camera, no double-entendre jokes," stated Richardson to The New York Times.

With the sitcom, Fierstein will be busy next year. After ending his run as Tevye in the Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof on January 8th, he will travel to Las Vegas to play Edna for 12 weeks in the 2006 Las Vegas production of Hairspray.

The multi-talented Fierstein is known for both his performing and writing. As a librettist, Fierstein penned the book of La Cage aux Folles; he won a Tony Award for his work. Fierstein also picked up two Tonys (Best Actor in a Play, Best Play) in 1983 for his Torch Song Trilogy, his Broadway debut. Other Broadway writing credits include the play Safe Sex and the musical Legs Diamond. Spookhouse and Forget Him are other plays by Fierstein, who has also penned a children's book called The Sissy Duckling. Fierstein, who is known for his distinctive gravelly voice, has also appeared on screen in Duplex, Indepedence Day, Bullets Over Broadway, Mrs. Doubtfire and the film version of Torch Song Trilogy; he also leant his voice to Mulan. Fierstein earned an ACE Award for HBO's "Tidy Endings."
