According to the New York Times, Spring Awakening composer Duncan Sheik has been tapped to compose the score for Cake Eaters, a new film directed by Mary Stuart Masterson.

Marking the directorial film debut of Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes, Nine on Broadway), Cake Eaters is a family drama that will feature theatre veterans such as Elizabeth Ashley, Jesse L. Martin, Andrea Martin and Miriam Shor, as well as Bruce Dern, Kristen Stewart, Thomas Cavanaugh and Aaron Stanford.

Sheik composed the music for Spring Awakening, which also features lyrics and book by Steven Sater.  Based on the Franz Wedekind play of the same title, the acclaimed, sexually charged musical is currently playing the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

Sheik and Sater's new musical The Nightingale, based upon a story by Hans Christian Andersen, will open at La Jolla Playhouse in fall of '07.  A Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Sheik's songs have been used in such films as Transamerica and Great Expectations.  He has also scored a number of plays.
