Disney Channel's JESSIE to Be Network's First Character to Become Engaged

Disney Channel's Jessie, played by Debby Ryan, will break ground for the network this fall when she becomes the channel's first lead character to get engaged.

Adam Bonnett, Disney Channel executive vice president of original programing, told The Associated Press "Jessie is an adult, and we felt we could tackle this in a way that still feels appropriate for our audience."

Jessie is a Texas native who moves to New York to become the nanny to the eclectic children of married movie stars, how must adjust to life in the big city.

Ryan believes that Jessie's decision is important tot he younger viewers that look up the the character. "Your principal character is deciding whether or not she should start her life with a man," she says.

"Our audience isn't dealing with somebody proposing to them, but they are dealing with choices they have to make in their life, and thinking things through, following their heart and wanting to make the right choice," Bennett adds.

"Jessie" stars Debby Ryan as Jessie, Broadway vet Kevin Chamberlin as Bertram, Peyton List as Emma, Karan Brar as Ravi, Cameron Boyce as Luke and Skai Jackson as Zuri.
