Velocity presents a homecoming for WA native and emerging international superstar, Daniel Linehan. Linehan performs his critically acclaimed Not About Everything and leads a 6-day Residency with a cast of Seattle guest artists to create the latest installment of The Karaoke Dialogues (2014).

Daniel Linehan is an exceptional artist recognized internationally for being on the cutting edge of experimental dance and a celebrated a new voice in contemporary performance. Born in Olympia, WA, Linehan has not performed in this region since graduating from the University of Washington in 2004. His critically acclaimed solo Not About Everything has been presented in more than 50 venues internationally, but never on the West Coast of the U.S. A major part of Velocity's mandate is to champion the creation and presentation of Washington State performance. Linehan is a Washington State artist, changing the field of dance with his bold ideas. Velocity is excited to be the catalyst for Linehan's homecoming.

Not About Everything is a funny and through-provoking attempt to remain clear-sighted and lucid amid the physiological disorientation that accompanies 30 minutes of relentless spinning.

The Karaoke Dialogues (2014) In a six-day residency marathon, Linehan will collaborate with ten Seattle dancers and actors to explore with finesse and humor our connection to our identity, both singular and collective and ask: What do we win, and what do we lose by participating in forms of common action? Highlights from the intensive residency will be part of Daniel Linehan's performance.

The Karaoke Dialogues Workshop is a part of a weeklong Velocity Open Forum happening alongside Linehan's Seattle performances.

Velocity Open Forums invite one-and-all into open, free-wheeling conversations on issues in contemporary art and society. This week of multidisciplinary art, book clubs, workshops, speakeasy events and conversations takes place alongside Daniel Linehan's performances of Not About Everything / The Karaoke Dialogues with a focus on what it means to take an ethical approach to life and art.

Directed by Joan Laage (Kogut Butoh), The Engendering Project: Casting Shadows emerged out of Laage's investigations into how gender fluidity and transformation have continued to shape the artist's work over the past two decades. Laage's collaborators are Kaoru Okumura (video and photography) and Jackie An with Doris Bartha and Emily Price (music). This project is supported in part by the CityArtist Projects 2013, City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE 2013
Dayna Hanson

Velocity's Artist-in-Residence Program serves the needs of accomplished professional dance and movement-based artists or collaborative teams engaged in the process of research / creation by providing free space, time and support for work, reflection, and community interaction. The Artist in Residence also interfaces with other Velocity programs throughout the year.

Stay tuned for a series of projects from Velocity's 2013 Artist in Residence Dayna Hanson. Dayna's current dance theater work, The Clay Duke, is inspired by a Florida school board shooting; produced by ArKtype and On the Boards, The Clay Duke is being developed in a series of creative residencies, including at ACT Theatre, Maggie Allesee National Choreographic Center in Tallahassee, FL and Velocity during Dayna's tenure as 2013 Artist-in-Residence. The Clay Duke premieres in Holland in Nov 2013 before it's Seattle premiere December 5-8, 2013 at On the Boards.

Dayna Hanson is a Seattle-based choreographer, dance theater director and filmmaker. Co-founder of dance theater company 33 Fainting Spells, Dayna's work has been presented nationally and internationally at REDCAT, Joyce Theater, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Walker Art Center, Miami Light Project, Kunstlerhaus Mousonturm, New York Live Arts, Dance Umbrella Austin and many others. Her dance films have screened at more than 50 festivals worldwide, including New York Film Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival, and most recently at South By South West and SIFF with Improvement Club. She co-curated 33 Fainting Spells' international dance film festival, New Dance Cinema, from 1999- 2003. Dayna is 2006 Guggenheim Fellow in Choreography, a 2010 United States Artists Oliver Fellow in Dance and a 2012 recipient of Artist Trust's Arts Innovator Award.
