Continental Resources to Present Lyric Show DRIVING MISS DAISY Benefit, 4/27, 4/28

By: Apr. 15, 2010

The 2009-2010 "Lyric Theatre at the Enid Symphony" series continues this April with the Pulitzer Prize winning play, Driving Miss Daisy. The unique theatrical partnership between Lyric and the Symphony is generously underwritten by Continental Resources and continues to allow Northwest Oklahomans to enjoy Lyric's professional productions at affordable prices. Driving Miss Daisy will play at the Enid Symphony Center on Tuesday, April 27th and Wednesday, April 28th at 7:30pm. Ticket proceeds will benefit both organizations.

Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize winning play, upon which the film starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman is based, takes place in the deep South in 1948 and tells the story of Daisy Werthan, an elderly rich and sharp-tongued widow who must rely on the services of a chauffeur, a thoughtful, soft-spoKen Black man named Hoke. In a series of scenes spanning twenty-five years, the two grow close, developing a deep and unique friendship despite their differences.

Two actors straight from New York will star in this heartwarming play. Darrie Lawrence (Broadway: Come Back, Little Sheba) will play Daisy, and Keith Johnson (Olney Theatre: Driving Miss Daisy) plays Hoke Coleburn, the kind driver who eventually becomes Daisy's best friend.

Driving Miss Daisy is directed by Guy Stroman, who was one of the original developers of the hit musical Forever Plaid in 1989. Stroman's work as a director has been seen in plays and musicals throughout the country, including Driving Miss Daisy, Steel Magnolias, Mame and Always, Patsy Cline, and A Tale of Two Cities.

Tickets for Driving Miss Daisy are $25 and can be purchased by calling the Enid Symphony at (580) 237-9646. The 2009-10 "Lyric Theatre at the Enid Symphony" series will conclude with the phenomenal one-woman concert, Renee Anderson ALIVE!, on May 18th and 19th.
