An Honorary Ziegfeld Girl, Neuwirth earned her first Tony Award for Sweet Charity in 1986. Her other Broadway credits include Fosse, Damn Yankees, Dancin', Little Me and A Chorus Line.

On the big screen, she has appeared in The Big Bounce, Tadpole, Summer of Sam, Celebrity, Liberty Heights, Malice, Jumanji, Bugsy and Green Card.
