Acclaimed Tony Awards Director Weiss To Helm 61st Primetime Emmy Awards

Variety reports that Emmy winning director Glenn Weiss has been chosen to helm the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards. This will be Weiss' debut guiding the TV awards show.

The ceremony, will be executive produced by Don Mischer. Weiss and Mischer collaborated together many times in the past on projects; most recently they worked as co-executive producers on the last three Super Bowl halftime shows.

Glenn Weiss also just worked with this year's Emmy host, Neil Patrick Harris, on last month's 63rd annual Tony Awards telecast, which were hosted by Harris and directed and exec produced by Weiss. Weiss has directed and executive produced nine Tony Awards, earning four Emmys awards for his work on the Broadway celebration broadcasts. The Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony is switching back to its original Sept. 20th date. 

The TV Academy and CBS had moved the Emmys up one week, to Sept. 13th, so as not to conflict with an NFL doubleheader. But the organizers didn't realize that the new date would conflict with the already scheduled MTV Music Video Awards. MTV was unable to move its show, so the TV Academy and CBS made the choice to move the Emmy ceremony back to Sept. 20th.

The decision to move the Emmys back to Sept. 20th now means that the Creative Arts Emmys, slated for Sept. 12th, will no longer have to share the same weekend with the Primetime event and will once again take place at the Nokia.
