Favourite Jerry Herman song#1

So, he doesn't get as much praise her as Saint Steve, but what do we consider JH's best work?
Two ballads for me: 'Look Over There' from 'La Cage' and 'Kiss Her Now' from 'Dear World'. (Honorary mention: Time Heals Everything, but that's obvious).

'Song on the Sand'. Utterly absolutely 100% with no doubt. It makes me cry pretty much every time I hear it. :3 :3 :3

It's funny isn't- he's probably known more for production numbers, yet the ballads have real emotional quality.

It's Today! - the whole sentiment and idea of the song is something to treasure.

Favourite lyric of all time:
"Though it may not be anyone's birthday,
And though it's far from the first of the year,
I know that this very minute has history in it, we're here!"

Actually I must I admit I have a bizarre affinity for "Elegance" from Dolly as well.

"It's Today" still takes the cake though.

Mine are both from Mack and Mabel:
I Won't Send Roses
and
Time Heals Everything

two really powerful songs.

An interesting range of choices. But is he sentimental or emotionally direct?

I'm not sure I know the difference Dev, but what I would say is that I don't like much from La Cage because a lot of it sounds derivative of his earlier works.

There was a time I would have chosen a few songs from Mack and Mabel as my favourites, but over-familiarity has worn me down and so now I would chose

We're Almost There from The Grand Tour.

Much else in that score is ravishing too: You I Like, I'll Be Here Tomorrow, Marianne, I Belong Here, One Extraordinary Thing.

Can I be greedy and have three but from very specific recordings

Marianne - from Barbara Cook's It's Better With a Band Carneige Hall recording - there's just something other worldy about the orchestration - kind of like the start of The Man in the Moon from Mame that always reminds me of Sunset Boulevard.

Mame - especially Julia McKenzie's Radio 2 Recording. (with Bosom Buddies as a close follow up from the same recording I'm sure I'd prefer the original Arthur/Lansbury if it wasn't quite so truncated).

So Long Dearie - From the Pearl Bailey recording, which is the only version of that score I actually enjoy.

Working out which were my favourites made me realise that whilst I love a great many Jerry Herman songs I prefer Sondheim's scores.

I love the DEAR WORLD score and two favourites are:

"I've Never Said I Love You" and "Tea Party".

I also think that "Love is Only Love" from the Hello Dolly! soundtrack is beautiful and under appreciated.
"Your eyes..... they shine like the pants on my blue serge suit"
