Posted: 1/14/09 at 2:16pm
'MacBecks- The Musical' opens in Dublin this evening.
It plays on David Beckham's Shakespearian qualities of fashion, comedy and football tragedy!'

Watch the video on BBCNews.com- its very scary!
Expect it on Shaftesbury Ave before the end of the summer!

The most worrying is said in this article:

http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/arts/macbecks-aiming-for-the-global-goal-1599616.html

"THE creators of 'Macbecks', the latest Irish soccer satire, are hoping to bring the production to the global stage if it succeeds at home."

Not only you might get it, even we on the continent might! :S

Well this is testimony why Dublin has such a rubbish theatre scene.

Gone are the days of the wonderful, ground breaking, productions of the Abbey Theatre Dublin.

Well excuse you, but Dublin has a theatre scene which is doing just fine. This was aimed only as a money-spinner at a really horrible venue (the Olympia had a cave-in like the Shaftesbury in London years ago and is still in crappy condition).

I have seen the show, and I know people involved in it. It's not great and it's not going to spin the money intended, now will it go global, but then again, every city produces some below par stuff every now and then.

The Dublin theatre scene is not producing this. The same company who always produce this kind of thing are. It's nothing new, and frankly the script, even if it is a new show, is about 4 years out of date. But don't tar the entire city with the Macbecks brush.

I certainly wasn't taring the city's reputation with this one production. I was merely mourning the loss of the great scene it had 15/20/25/30 years ago.
I had the great pleasure of doing a play at the Abbey in the early 80s and it really was a force in the theatre world. Dublin asa city is one of my favorites!
Many of the Abbeys productions transfered to London and then Broadway but this hasn't happened in a long time now.

Sorry, I meant Phantom of London was.

I agree that the country isn't producing what it used to, but there's not particular reason for it. The Abbey still stages some top-notch productions, but it is now taking a lot of rubbish on too. It doesn't have the money, leadership or certainty it used to have. There are no new characters like Brian Friel producing work, there is no money to tour productions or transfer, and the theatre has been searching for a new home for years now. The Arts Council are only interested in supporting a few large independent companies and paying for lots of huge white canvases with little black dots in the middle. It's ridiculous. I know various people, including myself, have applied for grants to produce new works in musical theatre and straight drama, and have been turned down in favour of some of the most useless things I've ever heard of. There are artists guilds which the council supports, but they're all invitation only and very backward. It's anarchy.

Other companies such as the Gate Theatre have stepped up their efforts. However, now that Ireland as a state is old enough to have a body of work sufficiently large to call an artistic legacy, theatres will only produce old Beckett and Yeats (nothing wrong with that, of course) and not new ideas.

I'm not old enough to remember the Abbey back in the good old days as it were, but I can only imagine.

Which play? He turned 80 last Friday, they played Philadelphia, Lughnasa, Translations and Faith Healer on the Radio along with some other good programmes. I've studied Philadelphia Here I Come for exams.

And I don't drink, so I can't be of any use to you there.

So vmlinnie, did they move to LA or Milan or still stuck in Manchester>

And yeah, this was written by the same people who did "I, Keano". I wonder if they will put "I'm on Setanta Sports" and challenge Ave Q
I once heard someone describe her (Ruthie Henshall) singing as sounding as though she's trying to swallow a whole meatball slightly larger than her windpipe. (The same person compared Michael Ball's singing to sounding as though he's sitting on a washing machine on spin cycle and Colm Wilkinson's to a man with a paralyzed lip trying to eat cottage cheese.) --- Schmerg_The_Impaler

They went to Madrid. They didn't make it to LA, let alone Milan.

It had no relation to the actual story of Macbeth. Also, there were a lot of changes during previews, to the point that hardly anyone is killed anymore.
