'Legally Blonde'
'Rent'
'Hairspray'
'Spamalot'

...and now 'Spring Awakening'!
'Young Frankenstein' rumored for February!
There are, of course, a number of new shows lined up for opening next year- thank goodness!
The West End is holding steady for now but its pretty scary for Broadway at this time.

Gosh, really.

Whens that off? Is transfering to london the kiss of death for broadway shows?

Everything crossed Billy continues to sell out there.

The donmar WE season with low prices seems to have fallen at the most perfect time.

what makes me laugh is the economy is crashing and shows are shutting up shop yet White Christmas is charging over $150 for top price tickets.

I think Avenue Q will announce soon as well

yet White Christmas is charging over $150 for top price tickets.

That's nothing, Wicked, Jersey Boys and Billy Elliot are charging over $300 for top tickets, those aren't the only shows, there are others. Disney is charing $250 for top tickets.

Yes, but

"Hairspray"

and

"Spamalot"

are still running in the West End.

What has the West End given Broadway, lately?

Equus and The Seagall.

Yay!

You guys get straight plays, we get musicals.

It is what it is.

Wishing Only Wounds, those $300 and $250 tickets are for premium seats. $140 is the regular top price for orchestra and front mezzanine seats to White Christmas. They also have premium seats for $250.

I really don't see how any of the closings that far are much of a surprise. All those shows have had dwindling numbers for a while and, though the recent tanking of the economy obviously didn't help, they've been on their way out for a while now.

Premium seats are premium seats, $120 is the average norm on Broadway at he moment we all know that. so its not the prices!
Do excuse me if I forgot 'Xanadu' and 'Title Of Show' but they are pretty, or should I say very, forgettable!
Its very sad that so many have to close and give notice in what seems like a mad rush to close, Broadway will recover- it already has an exciting season lined up starting next year.

Yeah i wasn't talking about premium seats im just talking regular top price tickets, and to charge that much for a family show in the time of financial crisis over Christmas seems greedy and insane

Be interesting to see how tickets sell in the coming months. I cant say I know anyone willing to fork out for tickets, especially when most of the decent seats at the Palace are in the 95 premium bracket.

See sense about what? -'Priscilla' is only charging what others will be charging next April- its not even 70 top on a weekend! Most of the shows like 'Wicked', 'Spamalot' and 'We Will Rock You' are already in the 60s today so what will they be charging in a years time? If people want premium seats then so be it but 99% of Jo Public will be paying the regular prices. Most premium seats are released at normal price on the day via management agreement as they don't sell well and are just a ploy to catch people with more money than sense! Its a little unfair to pick on 'Priscilla' and single it out as a bad apple! It will be worth every penny of the 65 top ticket- didn't stop 'Acorn Antiques selling at 70 a few year ago!
West End shows that tour the UK can top 40/45 out of London. ('We Will Rock You' in Manchester for example and 'Mary Poppins')

Yeah, we have a good bunch of stuff opening soon. I mean... maybe they won't be GOOD, but they at least will be NEW, and NEW means people come to see them. New Yorkers get bored with stuff after a while (i'm one of them) so it's nice to have stuff close so that other stuff can open. We only have so many theaters. Spamalot, Legally Blonde, Rent, Xanadu, Title Of Show and Spring Awakening. Title of show just never found it's broadway audience, I think it should have stayed off broadway. Would have done better. Legally Blonde, Spamalot, SPring Awakening were just ready to close. They all recouped investments and made more on top of that. They started to go down in gross sales, so you shut it down. That's perfectly accceptable. Rent had been open for 12 years, which was so wonderful, but that also, was just time to close. Xanadu was in a 500 seat house so if that wasn't selling it was REALLY time to close it.

BUt because of those closings we get some nice new things to see! West Side Story is going into the Palace, Guys and Dolls into the Nederlander, Hair into the Shubert (supposedly), Shrek into the Broadway. Theres some fun new things opening, so I see this more as a new "generation" of shows... if you will.

And to close immediately after the holiday rush is quite normal if a show decides to close.

I try re: Broadway Is Falling Like Flies! hhehehee

If you don't have a positive look on it, then it just sets you up for major dissapointment. No show has lasted forever. Every show posts a closing notice as some point. And This whole Phantom lasting for 20 some odd years, that's not really normal for new york. Except those British gems like Les Miz, Cats, and Miss Saigon (i'm not mocking them, they are my favorite shows ever, even though some fellow new yorkers would not agree) Most shows close within a few years, that USED to be normal. Phantom, Cats, Les Miz, Miss Saigon, Lion King (note 4 of those are from the Cameron Mac cross over... he obviously knows what he's doing) I wish some more Cameron shows could come over. Anyway, yeah, i think you have to have a healthy attitude! re: Broadway Is Falling Like Flies!

I find it interesting that producers set these high prices for shows thinking that they would be a hit and that people would be rushing for tickets. But, people take one look at the prices and look the other way.

Premium seats are for people who are silly enough to pay that sort of price, I do not think there are many of them, even less now with the banking and stock market crash!!!!
