'Oh Dear! What A 'Carrie' On!' (Revisited)

A thread devoted to those wonderful musicals we call flops that appear on our stages for a brief moment but are always with us because some clever person got them into the recording studio!
A big 'thanks' to all of them!
"Oh Dear! What A Carrie' On' comes from the late theatre critic Jack Tinker. After seeing the opening night of 'Carrie-The Musical' in Stratford this was the wonderful headline to his review the following day! I know 'Carrie' isnt on CD but i also know that there are thousands of CDs of it out there if you know where to look!

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

'SOMEONE LIKE YOU'
By and Staring Petula Clark
Strand Theatre, now The Novello
March 22nd 1994 for far too long! (87 perfs)

Someone should have told poor Pet that the UK theatre going audience had no
interested in the American civil war.
The amazing thing is it took 13 years for the CD to be released.

This is a great thread looking at all these flops, I alway wonder why producers choose to go for such awful projects. Field of Ambrosia would be one I would want to see just for the hilarity factor.

Slightly off-topic but wasn't there a msuical called Mr and Mrs which was based on Brief Encounter?

'PIPPIN' ran on Broadway for over 5 years and produced an album that must be owned by every musical theatre lover.
.....but when it arrived in London it only managed a brief run of 85 performances at Her Majestys from Oct 30th 1973.

thanks for the info on Mr and Mrs, I remember reading ages ago that ALW wanted to do a musical version of Brief Encounter which I think wouldn't be a bad idea as it's such a good story.

Noel Coward hated the comedienne/ actress Hylda Baker who was just 4' 5' and hell to work with and remarked 'i would like to break that bloody womans neck-if i could find it'
Now London has a fabulous new version of 'Brief Encounter' at the Cinema Haymarket that has music written for it. Lloyd Webber would have ruined it.

re: 'Oh Dear! What A 'Carrie' On!'

Isn't that 70 Girls 70 logo a bit of a cheat- that wasn't the London logo was it?

I saw the show- I love the song Emma Finch- better than Coffee in a Cardboard Cup, which has tended to survive the show more.

Incidentally, the show featured one of my favourite Vaudeville jokes: the nun and the blind man..

Don't forget 'Out of the Blue' at the Shaftesbury- and probably one of the founding fathers of the legend of the Shaftesbury curse!

17 performances from 4 November 1994.

Yes I have the flyer, but needless to say, can't upload it. Wicked, could you oblige, old bean?

And don't forget the glorious 7 weeks of 'The Hunting of the Snark'- one of the most unfairly savaged shows of the last 20 years.

Oh wicked you are a little star as always

I actually have some great dvd footage of 70 girls 70 but from its ill fated Broadway run, i actually thought it was pretty good, doesn't it get a lot of amateur groups doing it??

I saw Personals, it was a fun little show but didnt really do anything, a few nice songs and a few funny moments but it didnt feel like a West End show.
