It has Paul O Grady, doesn't it (It's my venue of choice being 30 mins away, so I'm relatively up to date) so I'm imagining its one of the better pantomimes at the moment.

I'm trying to be helpful instead of explaining in explicit detail why pantomime is to theatre what fecal matter is to modern art. An unfortunately continuing reminder that excellence must be proven by sheer wastes of space such as...I should probably stop myself.

Go see Aladdin, enjoy your festive spirits, while I shall be enjoying my Bah humbugs and the Sondheim on Sondheim soundtrack.

It got great reviews in local press (ok thats not exactly difficult to do) but whatsonstage.com also gave it five stars which is unusual. Its my local too and word of mouth has been pretty strong. Only negatives ive heard is some of the panto traditions arnt there, and its a little more like a west end show. Considering how many poor xmas shows Southampton has had in recent years it looks like they may have struck gold

I've heard nothing but poor reviews for this.
Yet again, they have decided to stray away from traditional panto but still try and sell it as one!
Guess, they'll do the same with 'Peter Bloody Pan' next year.
I was gonna venture down to Southampton to see this one but have been advised not to bother.

I have seen it and thought it was great. It is closer to the Disney Aladdin in story and there is no Wishey Washey. I thought it was a nice change from the usual Aladdin and it is worth going to Southampton just to see the return of Lily Savage - a brilliant performance and the first time I have seen a story of Aladdin that starts off in a Birkenhead cemetry! I enjoyed all the other cast members also and the flying carpet is easily the best I have seen. On opening night it lasted about 3 hours and 15 mins long - well worth missing my train back to London for!!

I saw the show last week and it is fun enough but like a lot of Mayflower's Christmas show I think it doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a traditional panto or a Christmas show with songs? The Life I Never Led from Sister Act was slipped in for some reason (sung by princess Jasmine). Matthew Rixon and And Spiegel were great as the policemen in what was similar to the panto-dame role.
The flying carpet was great but the genie was not. Really bad in my opinion.

Overall I'd say its a fun show and worth going but not a masterpiece.

WHAT THE CUK ARE YOU ON ABOUT???
'they have no Wishee?'
Thats not a panto then- no traditional characters- that means 'oh lets try and be modern' the audience want the fun and slapstinck- thats panto! Audiences are begging for the participation!
End of....

BTW sack Eric Potts NOW!

Hi I saw Aladdin at FAREHAM on Boxing day with my littleys and they loved it, so did their mums and dads!
FAREHAM is just a few miles east of Southampton.
It was a traditional panto, just a little bit of smut, but some good performances from the eight professionals.

The Genie of the lamp is all disco and Hi-fiving the audience. while Aladdin is very pretty and leggy. Wishee Washee is from Kids TV and the Emporer has a great voice. Peter Duncan is the star and he was quite capable of sending himself up!

Usual shouting out and sweeties to the audience. Loved it and at 15 a ticket - 10 for a party of 10 or more - great value.

Paul O Grady has been out with flu last two days, back today. Several nasty postings on the Mayflowers facebook page from people complaining he wasnt on, they had travelled so far, compensation etc, and apparantly the understudy got booed. Its hell of a role to be playing Paul O Grady, playing Lilly Savage, playing Widow Twankey. Disgusting behaviour.

People were offered refunds or rebooking

Gandolf was in watching it the week before Christmas
