It was announced today here in Melbourne that LOVE NEVER DIES will open in Melbourne in May 2011 at the Regent Theatre prior to North America. Director is Simon Phillips who directed PRISCILLA. (Didn't I read somewhere here that Craig Horwood was to direct Toronto then Australia?).

Originally he was asked to help the London production during a closure period, ten it was announced he would be doing both the Toronto (New York) and Melbourne productions!
Haven't heard much since?
Plus he's busy with panto from now until end of January!

ALW has stated that the Melbourne and Toronto productions will be two totally different stagings and he will "choose" which version to take to Broadway - so they will obviously have two different directors. I think Craig is doing Toronto.

It's an incredible conceit that the Lord still thinks the problem with the show is the production when in truth it's simply that the piece itself is crap. lol

From what I've heard I tend to agree bob8rich.I would have thought Craig Horwood might have done Melbourne. Simon Phillips is actually a New Zealander.

Toronto at the moment is off. The theatre in Toronto RUG had secured have backed out.

Currently the show is opening in Melbourne and then possibly that revised show will open in London in the Summer, however, its uncertain if the London production will be open next Summer.

Basically, the show is getting into a farce - things change from week to the next and from knowing people working on the show its not a pleasurable experience and none of them would be suprised if they were out of work next week or still in work for the next year! All the while this is happening, audiences are dwindling

I booked my tickets for 27th Oct on Fri, and there were only 4 stalls seats left.

So, is the London production planned to close and re-open.

That would suck, coz i'd have to see it again >:

I for one am pretty excited to see what Phillips comes up with.

Sometime, I think we all like to dig at this show for no particular reason. The reviews were no where near the unanimous pans we like to think they were - the Times, Independent and Telegraph all loved it.

Yes I haven't seen the show, and the lyrics are rather trite ... but the score itself is bloody beautiful!!

Still getting standing ovations in London! Whole stalls on their feet tonight, not a sight often seen in London, especially this far into the run. Ramin was great performance as always, Celia gave a truly beautiful performance.

I'm wondering where it will go in Toronto (if that still happens)

The Princess of Wales is booked to July
Royl Alex has ROA's sit down
Cannon has Billy Elliot strating in January but they have not announced a closing date (I believe it is the tour not a sit down)

Personally, because the Cannon has such a shallow stage, I would think for a new re-designed show they would "want" a more flexible space like the Princess of Wales.
Unless Mervish backs out totally then DanCap can put it in the HUGe North York Centre or the HUGER 4 seasons opera house. The only place left would be the Elgin and thats rather tiny.

We get good reports like yours, but if the show is so good and doing so well, why are they re-working it?

Because ALW knows that London=/=New York.
"Itís the fractured quality in [Bernadette Peters'] singing voice and line readings that puts across the character as someone for whom resentment is sliding into madness." - NYtimes on Follies (2011).
