It has been announced that War Horse is to open on Broadway's Vivian Beaumont Theatre, which will preview from 17th March 2011 and opens on 14th April 2011. It is good to see this acclaimed London production get its New York bow, especially as War Horse is a national Theatre production and is one of London's leading show.

Sadly the multi award winning South Pacific will capsize and will play its final performance on 22nd August 2010, South Pacific would of performed a very respectable 1000+ performances and grossed $80m in it's 2 1/2 year tenure.

I saw 'South Pacific' on a bitter cold winter night just before Christmas last year. I was so very, very pleasantly surprised. A far superior production to that which the National staged a few years back and instantly wipes away the memeory of the dreadful am/dram production that played the Prince Of Wales in the late 80s. The current New York version is a gorgeous production of the kind of musical I don't normally have much time for.

I really hope I get to see South Pacific this summer before it closes. But I'm even more excited about the prospect of seeing War Horse next year, though I will probably get to see it in London before I go back to NYC.

See it in London if poss.
The presentation at the New London is much closer to its original Olivier staging than will be achievable at the Viviane Beaumont in New York.

We certainly wont be getting 'South Pacific' over here.
You simply must put 'War Horse' and ' Jerusalem' at the top of your 'must see' list!

I wish South Pacific would come over too, Bartlett Sher direction is brilliant and very well staged.

I hope to catch the tour in Los Angeles in May.

Unless The National were to co-produce it then I think this revival of South Pacific is unlikely to come to London, unfair really since War Horse is transferring and a lot of Donmar, National and Royal Court shows are or have transferred over the years like Enron, Red etc but we never get anything from the Lincoln Centre, Roundabout or MTC which is slightly unfair.

Isn't the Vivian Beaumount a thrust stage like the Olivier and New London.

The Lincoln Center Theater have announced the 2010/11 season.

John Guare's 'A Free Man of Color' Opens, Oct. 21, 2010
The National's production of 'War Horse' Opens, March 17, 2011.

They are are also presenting a musical version of 'Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown' to open on Broadway at the Belasco 2nd Oct 2010.
One of my favorite films and could be a great musical.

Thanks Mama x

So is that a thrust stage illustrated like the one in The Lincoln Centre?

Does a thrust stage have to cover the orchestra or is it just a stage that protrudes into the audience?

Protrudes into the audience basically.

...and then there's Theatre In The Round

Would theatre in the round be like the New London, Royal Albert Hall, Circle in the Square, Trafalgar Studio 2?

Is the Olivier Theatre a 'thrust stage' is there any other examples please?

No, theatre in the round has audience on ALL sides. Like this:

Trafalgar 2 isn't in the round. In fact it doesn't really have a stage, just a floor! But the seating arrangement is similar to that of a theatre with a thrust stage, i.e. audience seated on three sides.

I guess the RAH is in the round if they use the seats behind the stage for audience seating, yes.

Haven't got time to look for more pictures right now, but this is the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford, which has a thrust stage with the audience seated in front and to the left and right of the stage. The actors can also enter from the walkways you can see:

Cant really count the Royal Albert Hall in here as it is a concert hall. Its musicals are presented in semi staging on what you would call a thrust stage.

So is there any other examples in London or New York of a thrust and In the Round Stage?

Is there any other sort of stages?

Much appreciated BTW.
