Apparently plans are afoot for a major tour of the Benny Andersson, Tim Rice, Bjorn Ulveaus musical Chess.

The first and only UK tour failed and closed 6 months early back in 1986.

I think you'll find it ran for a respectable 18 months from 90 to 91. It was running in the west end from 86 to 89. I think you're thinking of 96 tour which was quickly put together with virtually no promotion.

Yes, the first Chess tour did very well, and included the large, revolving illuminated floor.

Oh, I DO hope it's an actor-muso production. Said with both fearful sarcasm and genuine enthusiasm - I'd both love AND hate to see how that would work. Maybe they could finally find an orchestration for Someone Else's Story that works and they can stick to (not that dreadful country and western gubbins from the concert.)

Kristina at the Albert Hall AND Chess on tour? A busy year for Benny and Bjorn on stage.

If this does tour, I would love to see it, as too young to see the original Chess and cannot see a revival happening in London anytime soon, the only problems with tours they do not tend to stop anywhere near London!

' the only problems with tours they do not tend to stop anywhere near London!'

Wimbledon? Woking is often on tour routes and only 20 mins or so outside of Waterloo? Southampton is only 1hr20 so doable in a day

Most places are easy to get to from London to see shows. Im just about to leave to see the last performance of 'Sleeping Beauty' in Birmingham- just 1hr 20mins from Euston!

I've done Nottingham, Leicester,Manchester, Bradford, Leeds, Norwich, Bristol all in a day seeing matinees of shows over the years.

Its a damn sight cheaper and easier theses days than it was say, 20 years ago.

Awww, it must be terrible with the limited number of shows you can see in London.
As some of you know I am in Southampton so fairly lucky to have The Mayflower nearby. I still go to London to see new shows and big shows that won't tour (or not while still in town anyway).

As mama and princeton say it isn't that hard to travel outside London for a show, and as tickets are generally cheaper the cost wouldn't be too much more, as it is for me coming into London.

I do hope Chess tours, I never saw the original version and really liked the concert at RAH.

I was expecting there to be a major production of the rewritten, re-refined, re-revised, definitive, perfectivised version after the RAH concert.

This doesn't sound like it.

Look at kenwright's Whistle Down the Wind Tour, non of the confirmed dates are near London yet;

20 Jan- 30 Jan Empire Liverpool
1 Feb - 6 Feb Lyceum Theatre Sheffield
8 Feb - 13 Feb His Majesty's Theatre Aberdeen
15 Feb - 20 Feb Bristol Hippodrome
22 Feb - 27 Feb Theatre Royal Nottingham
1 Mar - 6 Mar The Mayflower Southampton
15 Mar - 20 Mar Edinburgh Playhouse
22 Mar - 3 Apr Manchester Opera House
5 Apr - 17 Apr Leeds Grand Theatre
19 Apr - 24 Apr Theatre Royal Plymouth
26 Apr - 1 May Milton Keynes Theatre
24 May - 29 May Glasgow King's Theatre
31 May - 12 Jun Theatre Royal Newcastle
14 JUN - 19 Jun Venue Cymru Llandudno
28 Jun - 2 Jul Bradford Alhambra Theatre

See none of the dates are really near me, but if this show came to The Orchard, Dartford or The Churchill Bromley is very close to me, even Wimbledon is not too bad, living so close to London I do not see why I should travel, shows should come to me.

Hoping this comes to/near Cardiff, would like to see a version that I can actually 'see' having been to the RAH in very restrited view seats.

Also I agree lots of venues are accessible from London, I frequently made round trips to Cardiff, Birmingham and Nottingham while living there (for theatre and otherwise) as I frequently travel an hour or two from Cardiff for theatre and back in one day (Bath, Bristol, Birmingham, Stratford etc) it's doable, it just takes a bit of effort!
Maybe I'm on nobody's side http://phdconfessions.blogspot.com/

Milton Keynes is only about 40 mins on the train. Southampton about an hour or so. If I really wanted to see a show that was on tour but didn't come near London I would travel to see it. People travel into London all the time to see shows so why shouldn't Londoner's have to travel out sometime.

Generalising I know, but based on my experience from friends/family etc, people who live in London seem scared of leaving, even if its only 1/2 hour away! lol
