Sing Democracy 250 in Washington, D.C. is the final stop in a four-city national tour commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The June 13 performance at DAR Constitution Hall features two newly commissioned works: Redeem the Dream, by Brandon A. Boyd, setting Langston Hughes' poem "Let America Be America Again," and US, by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, drawing on texts from Richard Haass' The Bill of Obligations alongside quotes from notable Americans including Frederick Douglass, Barack Obama, and John Lewis. Conductor G. Phillip Shoultz, III leads the Together In Hope Choir, Congressional Chorus, National Children's Chorus - Scholars Washington D.C., and Main Line Symphony Orchestra, with a cameo appearance by mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves. The performance is part of the Smithsonian's "Of the People: The Smithsonian Festival of Festivals" and is underwritten in part by the Charles F. Kettering Foundation.
