A Harlem-based musician/scholar, Salim Washington plays tenor saxophone, flute and oboe, and is an accomplished composer/arranger. He is also a Harvard graduate who earned both a bachelor and doctorate degrees. His dissertation for his Ph.D is titled "Beautiful Nightmare: Coltrane, Jazz, and American Culture." As a musician Washington is an exciting saxophonist whom critics have lauded as one of the most compelling modern voices in the music.

Washington has performed with many of New York's finest musicians, including Randy Weston, Pharoah Sanders, John Hicks, Hilton Ruiz, Charles Tolliver, Oliver Lake, David Murray, and Billy Bang. His body of work-spanning three decades, from Mozambique to Mexico-has been lauded as one of the most compelling modern voices in jazz. Dr. Cornel West celebrates Salim's work as a "new synoptic vision of what jazz can be and do. The fundamental spirit behind this music...lives on in new ways and novel sounds."

Washington leads the Harlem Arts Ensemble, a rare organism in today's marketplace - not a one-time, all-star aggregation created for a label's recording project, but an ongoing musical entity, a close-knit artistic community of formidable musicians. "[The Harlem Arts Ensemble] works in a variety of idioms, mixing gospel reverence with bluesy abandonment, incorporating gritty funk into free flights of improv, while allowing soloists ample opportunity for a personal voice among the full bodied arrangements ... there are all periods of the jazz experience, from Ellington, into Monk, into Mingus, that twist through [their] material as one of the most interesting 'little big bands' in America." -AllAboutJazz Online
