Everyman Theatre, Baltimore's growing Equity theatre company announces a new season of shows, plus exiting changes in performance schedules, special subscription offers and new discount programs!

THE SEASON:

•(August 29 – October 7, 2007) SIGHT UNSEEN by Donald Margulies and directed by Vincent Lancisi

An American mega-artist whose work commands astronomical prices "sight unseen" travels to England for the first European retrospective of his work and he visits his original muse and former lover.  But the visit—and a difficult interview with a German art critic who questions his motives as a Jewish artist—sparks an unexpected crisis of identity. Margulies' Obie-winning play plumbs controversial subtexts of race, religion, and belonging, in a story laced with humor and incisive dialogue.

•(November 7 – December 16, 2007) MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING by William Shakespeare

Shakespeare's template for the modern romantic comedy hits all the right notes: witty repartee, verbal sparring with more than a hint of sexual attraction, crossed signals, and of course, the happy ending.  What starts as a couple's prank on friends turns into heartache, innuendo, and a battle of the sexes; but a wise fool saves the day, turning tragedy into high comedy. This production marks Everyman's maiden voyage into the realm of Shakespeare. The play features Resident Acting Company Members Deborah Hazlett, Megan Anderson, Stan Weiman, and joined by favorites Will Love and Carl Schurr.

•(January 16 – February 24, 2008) THE TURN OF THE SCREW by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Donald Hicken

A Young Governess agrees to care for two orphaned children with the caveat that she is forbidden to contact her employer, the children's handsome uncle, under any circumstances. Based on the Henry James novella, this provocative literary thriller takes us to a remote English country house for a stripped-down ghost tale that redefines what it means to be haunted and seduced by the past.  Donald Hicken returns to direct this thriller, features Resident Acting Company Members Megan Anderson and Bruce Nelson

Baltimore Premiere!

•(March 19 – April 27, 2008) August Wilson's GEM OF THE OCEAN, directed by Jennifer Nelson

The ninth of August Wilson's 10-play cycle starts with Aunt Ester's 287th birthday. When Citizen Barlow washes up on the front stairs of Aunt Ester's home in Pittsburgh, she sends him off to find a magical city in the middle of the ocean. Redolent with beautiful language, wit, and mischievous humor, "Gem" pulls us along on his spiritual journey. Set in the early 1900s and thus the first play chronologically in Wilson's decade-by-decade cycle, the play continues the master playwright's exploration of the African-American struggle with a provocative blend of realism and mysticism. To be directed by Jennifer Nelson (Artistic Director, African Continium Theatre), who directed Everyman's production of Fences (01-02).

•(May 21 – June 29, 2008) ART by Yazmina Reza and directed by Vincent M. Lancisi

Friends Serge, Marc and Yvan begin to pick apart the seams of their 15-year friendship when Serge buys an expensive modern painting of white lines on white canvas. The all-but-blank canvas becomes the centerpiece of a funny and ultimately penetrating discussion of how we are defined: by ourselves, our possessions, and our friends. This sophisticated, stimulating, and moving comedy was the winner of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play and the 1996 Olivier Award for Best Comedy.

Explore!  Everyman: Powerful Voices, New Work

Everyman Explore Everyman! will continue to explore the scope of artistic boundaries outside the theatre's Mainstage and provide a venue for new work and talent. Artistic Director Vincent M. Lancisi will work with Maryland's own award-winning slam storyteller, Gayle Danley, to shape a not-to-miss, dynamic solo performance, NAKED on April 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, 21st & 22nd, 2008.  Danley's poems come alive and invite the audience to take part in a visceral, transforming experience which runs the gamut of emotions.  Building upon the theatre's popular cabaret series, a concert tribute of the great composers Rodgers and Hart, lead by Howard Breitbart, will bring the world of Broadway and the Hollywood musical to lift on stage in the beginning of the new year.  More detailed information, including show times, will be released soon.  Subscribers save $5 per ticket on Explore! performances and will receive an exclusive email with more information soon.
