Norway National Museum Exhibit of Edvard Munch Works Show on Big Screen at Town Hall Theater Today

In 2013, Norway will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944), a towering figure in modern art. A special exhibit co-sponsored by Norway's National Museum and Munch Museum will pull together over 220 of the artist's paintings - the greatest number of Munch works ever assembled in one place.

Middlebury audiences will be able to see this "once-in-a-lifetime" exhibit without travelling across the world. A special broadcast, filmed live at the exhibit in Norway, will be shown at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater on Thursday, August 15.

"We're doing three broadcasts from blockbuster art exhibits this year," explains THT artistic director Douglas Anderson. "The first was a fabulous Manet exhibit that we showed in April, and in October we'll show a Vermeer exhibit from the National Gallery in London that is already generating a lot of excitement. We love the idea that our satellite technology allows us to bring this kind of alternative entertainment to the area."

To reach as large an audience as possible, THT is scheduling two performances today, August 15, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. "We've been surprised by how popular the 11 a.m. showing has been, but if you think about it, it makes sense. What could be more fun than to come downtown, see some of the world's most thrilling art, and then head to lunch at one of Middlebury's great restaurants?"

The series takes audiences behind-the-scenes to show some of the process of putting a mega-exhibition together, and as a special bonus the Munch broadcast will provide a tour of Norway to provide an in-depth biography of a man who lived from the mid-19th century through to the German occupation during the Second World War. Norwegian and international art experts will take us deeper into the man and his work, including, of course, "The Scream."
