THE SHAPE OF THINGS UNDONE Will Bring Site-Responsive Solo Show to Brighton Fringe
Writer Lita Doolan and performer Julie Broadbent reunite following their Off West End-nominated WYRE LADY OF FLEETWOOD
The Shape of Things Undone is a new solo work written by Lita Doolan and performed by Julie Broadbent. Drawing on Doolan's background in medical humanities, the play traces the fragile threads of recognition that persist even in the landscape of dementia - following Christine as she tries, in the small hours, to imagine her way across that distance - questioning what is lost when the small dignities of human care are replaced by the efficiency of modern infrastructure.
"How do we care for those who can no longer remember being cared for?" It is 4:00 AM in a staff room that has seen better days. As the night shift ends, a carer sits in the quiet, taking stock of a world that is physically and metaphorically being built over. Upstairs, a new high-tech medical innovation facility is preparing to open - a sterile, technical future that signals the end of the old world Christine has inhabited for decades.
The production reaches audiences differently. Blending intimate monologue with a site-responsive audio approach, audiences are invited to experience the piece in a setting of their own choosing - a garden, a quiet room, a familiar walk - creating a deeply personal encounter with the story's themes of presence, absence, and the shifting landscape of memory.
Doolan and Broadbent return to the fringe following their success with the Off West End-nominated Wyre Lady of Fleetwood. In this latest collaboration, they bring a quiet, observational power to one of the defining questions of our time: how do we maintain the architecture of a human soul when the world around it has been dismantled?
