Theatre Tulsa Announces Local Production Of DREAMGIRLS

Theatre Tulsa is planning the launch of its second Broadway Series musical, "Dreamgirls," which opens Oct. 8.

"Dreamgirls" follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago called "The Dreams" who become music superstars. The show is based on the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others.

The musical originally opened in 1981 on Broadway, later receiving 13 Tony Award nominations, including the Best Musical, and ultimately winning six.

The show was later adapted into a motion picture in 2006 that starred Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose, and Keith Robinson.

"Dreamgirls" features music by Henry Krieger, and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen.

Theatre Tulsa's production stars DeVon Douglass as Effie, Majeste Pearson as Deena, and Kubbi as Lorrel.

The cast also includes: Obum Ukabam, Nash McQuarters, Graceson Todd, Dion Berryhill, Cornelius Johnson, Justin Daniels, Dionne Lambert, Oti-Lisa Brown, Mecca Marie and Kimberly Martin.

The ensemble includes: Mariah Allen, Londyn Anderson, Messina Daniels, Joelle Galapate, Morgan Garrett, Amber Green, Troy Knauls, Kimberly Manning, Jess Miller, Jameela Stuckey, and Josh Yap.

The show is directed by Kelli McLoud Schingen, and choreographed by Mecca Marie. Christy Stalcup is the music director.

Performances will be Oct. 8-17 in the Williams Theatre of the Tulsa PAC. Showtimes on Oct. 8-9 and 15-16 are at 8 p.m.; The Oct. 10 and 17 matinees will be at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at tulsapac.com or by calling 918-596-7111.
