Donkeys. Music. Shakespeare. Pixies. What if the wrong way is really the best way? What if the side quests turn out to be the main adventure? What if turbulence is more fun and rewarding than smooth sailing? And how is your brain like slime mold?

Solo artist and jack of all trades Julie Lyn Barber has a mission: to figure out how to build an authentically joyful life while constantly being told (by the world or her anxiety) that she’s doing it wrong. Through stories, observations, and song snippets, she offers a candid, heartwarming, and hilarious guided tour of the chaotic inner workings of her mind, not to mention some fun facts about…well, all sorts of things, because one of her defining characteristics is the need to learn everything about everything.

Enjoy a peek behind the mask of this crafty chameleon. What you see might even help you discover your own Youkali.

Written and performed by Julie Lyn Barber. Directed and dramatuged by Dr. Michelle Dvoskin.

Julie Lyn Barber

Actor
Julie Lyn Barber grew up in a small town near Ottawa and almost studied kinesiology at the University of Guelph. Instead, she attended the University of Western Ontario, during which time she had the opportunity to perform in productions directed by 2 influential Canadian stage directors (both former artistic directors of London’s Grand Theatre.) She played “Rapunzel” in Into the Woods, directed by Dennis Garnhum, and “Johanna” in Sweeney Todd, directed by Bernard Hopkins. Her experience with these wonderful productions led her to pursue a career in the performing arts. She moved to Vancouver, where she played “Maria” in West Side Story at Theatre Under The Stars then to the U.S. where she has continued her career as an actor, singer, director, choreographer, music director and playwright. Some of the theatres with whom she has had the privilege of working include: Portland Center Stage (Gypsy), triangle productions! (Falsettos, Blood Brothers, Nunsense Ah Men!, Angry Housewives), Actors Theatre of Indiana (Whodunit…The Musical, Titanic), Round Barn Theatre (Baker’s Wife, The Music Man, Shenandoah, Joseph…Dreamcoat, Plain and Fancy, Guys and Dolls, All Shook Up, Crazy For You), and the Richmond Shakespeare Festival (Hamlet, As You Like It). Dr. Julie Lyn Barber has also taught performing arts in higher education for 25 years and is currently Head of Musical Theatre at Purdue University Fort Wayne, in Indiana, U.S.A.
