proudly presents the Toronto premiere of

TITANIC

the musical

"A thrilling new splendiferous Broadway musical… A fresh and stirring exploration of one of the great stories of our century." - The Chicago Tribune

"The Gem of the Ocean… grave and entertaining, somber and joyful… a genuine addition to the American musical theatre." - The New Yorker

The first-ever Toronto production of TITANIC – THE MUSICAL will be presented by The Civic Light Opera Company from Feb 2-18 at Fairview Library Theatre in Toronto. The production, designed and directed by Joe Cascone, will feature a cast of 35 and full orchestra in a stirring production not to be missed!

The sinking of the TITANIC in the early hours of April 15, 1912, remains the quintessential maritime disaster – perhaps even the defining event – of the 20th century. A total of 1,517 souls – men, women and children – lost their lives while only 711 survived. The fact that the finest, largest, strongest ship in the world, called, in fact, "unsinkable" should have been lost during its maiden voyage is so incredible that, had it not actually happened, no author would have dared to contrive it.

The catastrophe had social ramifications that went far beyond that night's events. When the wide discrepancy between the numbers of survivors from each of the ship's classes was revealed, there was a new, long-overdue scrutiny of the prevailing social system and its values.

With this in mind, composer Maury Yeston (Nine, Grand Hotel, Phantom)  and playwright Peter Stone (Annie Get Your Gun, 1776, The Will Rogers Follies) were convinced that the Titanic  story was the perfect basis for a musical.

Ultimately, when the musical opened on Broadway in April of 1997, it swept audiences and critics by storm, winning rave reviews and five Tony Awards that season, including Best Score and Best Musical of the year.

TITANIC – the musical opens February 2nd and runs to February 18th. Evening performances are at 8:00 from Wednesdays to Saturdays at 8:00, with matinees on February 5, 11, 12 and 18 at 2:00 p.m. Several performances are close to sell-out.

Performances take place at the FAIRVIEW LIBRARY THEATRE, 35 Fairview Mall Drive in North York, and tickets are priced at $20 each for weekend performances and $17.50 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tickets can be ordered by calling the BOX OFFICE at (416) 755-1717 or by visiting the website at www.CivicLightOperaCompany.com.
