2013 Toronto Theatre Critics' Awards Announced - TERMINUS and More!

The Toronto Theatre Critics' Award just announced their 2013 winners, with Outside the March's TERMINUS being the most celebrated production of the season.

The awards are in their third year, and are voted upon by Toronto critics who represent five of the city's newspapers and weeklies: The Globe and Mail (J. Kelly Nestruck); The Grid (Martin Morrow); NOW (Glenn Sumi); The National Post (Robert Cushman); and the Toronto Star (Richard Ouzounian). Shows which opened between June 2012 and May of 2013 were open for consideration.

TERMINUS was a critical darling last year, receiving rave reviews at the SummerWorks Festival before going on to be the inaugural show in the new Off-Mirvish Series. The show won Best Production of a Play as well as taking the awards for Best International Play (Mark O'Rowe), Best Director of a Play (Mitchell Cushman), and Best Design (Nick Blais).

Mirvish Productions also took home an award in the musical category, with the sold-out engagement of The Book of Mormon winning Best Production of a Musical and Best Director of a Musical (Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker). The show is currently playing at The Princess of Wales Theatre and recently announced that it had broken box office records for the venue.

The rest of the awards were spread out among a myriad of varied and wonderful Canadian productions, with Soulpepper, Tarragon, Canadian Stage, Acting Up Stage and more all being recognized.

Michelle Monteith won Best Actress in a Play for Little Ones (Tarragon) while Stuart Hughes won Best Actor in a Play for The Crucible (Soulpepper). On the musical side, Bree Greig won Best Actress for Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata (Factory/Acting Up Stage) and Stratford veteran Bruce Dow won Best Actor in a Musical for Of a Monstrous Child: A Gaga Musical (Buddies in Bad Times).

Best Supporting Actress in a Play went to Maev Beaty for Proud (Proud Productions), who also received rave reviews for her work in Terminus this year. Best Supportin Actor in a Play went to Alon Nashman for THIS (Canadian Stage). Best Supporting Actress in a Musical went to Bryn McAuley for Snow White: The Deliciously Dopey Family Musical (Ross Petty Productions) and Darrin Baker won Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Falsettos (Acting Up Stage in association with Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company.

For the first time ever the award will be distributed at The Spoke Club in a small ceremony which will be announced at a later date.
