EUREKA DAY to Make Central Florida Premiere with The Ensemble Company
The Tony Award-winning comedy by Jonathan Spector will be staged at The Ensemble Company's Orlando venue.
The Ensemble Company, the repertory theatre company in residence at Imagine Performing Arts Center, will continue its eighth season with Jonathan Spector’s acclaimed satire, Eureka Day, the Tony Award-winning hit exploring performative progressiveness, the challenges of consensus-based decision-making, and the conflict between ideology and reality.
Wildly relevant and bitingly funny, Jonathan Spector’s play comes to Central Florida from the award-winning Ensemble Company. Eureka Day is a private California elementary school with a Board of Directors that values inclusion above all else—that is, until an outbreak of the mumps forces everyone in the community to reconsider the school’s liberal vaccine policy. As cases rise, the board realizes with horror that they’ve got to do what they swore they never would: make a choice that won’t please absolutely everybody.
Eureka Day had its world premiere at the Aurora Theatre Company in Berkeley, California, as part of their 2017-2018 season and was commissioned through their Originate+Generate program. A London production produced by the Old Vic opened in 2022 starring Helen Hunt, which was followed by a Manhattan Theatre Company production on Broadway in 2024 featuring a cast headed by Bill Irwin, Jessica Hecht (in a Tony nominated performance), and Amber Gray. That production won both the Drama Desk and Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Play under the classics rule.
The Ensemble Company’s production of Eureka Day will be directed by producing artistic director Matthew MacDermid (Hedda Gabler, Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, Frozen) and stars Ensemble Company veterans David Lowe, last seen in our season premiere of The Effect, and Janine Papin, who was last seen in her critically acclaimed performance in The Other Place, as Don and Suzanne, respectively. They are joined by Krystal Glover and Bradley Thornton in their company debuts. The actor playing Meiko will be announced at a later date.
Eureka Day will run September 4-13, 2026 in the Barbara Lynn Johnson Theatre at Imagine Performing Arts Center (1220 Oviedo Mall Boulevard, Oviedo, FL 32765), with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm, Sundays at 2:00pm, and a special industry night performance on Monday, September 7th at 8:00pm.
