Associate of Fine Arts in Music

The music program at Sheridan College offers core undergraduate courses which prepare students for upper-level study in applied music, music education, music theory, music history, music technology, or music theater. Portions of the program are approved for teacher recertification and can fulfill requirements for elementary education majors needing training in music. Students in other disciplines may enroll in general music courses, lessons, and ensembles to fulfill various general education requirements and for personal enrichment.
Students electing to major in music are expected to become proficient in written and aural theory; acquire a historical perspective of music; develop instrumental and/or vocal performance skills; and to cultivate a professional approach to ensemble rehearsal techniques and performance. Music majors participate in at least one ensemble during each semester, subject to audition when required. Upon completion of the program, students can choose to transfer to a four-year institution or a professional certification program, or to pursue a career in music.
Musicians work in a number of freelance fields including recording, composition, private studio teaching, and performance. Others enjoy steady, salaried positions within large orchestras, high schools, and colleges. Our distinguished and professionally active faculty, state-of-the art teaching and performance facilities, numerous solo and ensemble performing opportunities, low tuition rates, and generous scholarships for both majors and non-majors can provide you with a great start to your musical future!
