Arthur Kipps, middle-aged lawyer, hired a theater and rent the services of a professional actor that help you recreate an unreal, eerie, event that happened years ago and his family. He hopes that this will of exorcism, and thus be freed him forever.

From the rickety stage full of furniture, papers and other objects, Kipps begins to read his story. At the beginning so hesitant, painful, so shy,... but, little by little, advised by the actor and with the help of theatrical effects, it grows in it trust and the ability to act, while we see you are assuming different roles, and the work is passed from narration to the theatrical performance.

The actor, meanwhile, plays the young Kipps, when this was sent by the Cabinet to which works in London, to resolve issues of a former client, the late Mrs. Drablow, who lived in a mansion that is isolated, surrounded by marshes, which Kipps meets the woman in black.

The spectrum of this woman, who seeks revenge for the death of his son, le appears to Kipps several times and, finally, unleashes a macabre sequence of events culminating in a truly surprising turn of events.
