The Hot Mikado celebrates the artistry of 1930s African-American entertainers like Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, and Louis Armstrong and the immense contributions they made to the arts during the Harlem Renaissance. In fact the original 1939 production included none other than Bill “Bojangles” Robinson himself, playing the role of The Mikado! The Hot Mikado takes a work from the traditional canon, Gilbert & Sullivan's 1885 operetta The Mikado, and puts a spin on it. It employs the medium of Jazz to re-tell a story originally conceived as a British light opera. It contains all of the G&S tunes you know from The Mikado including “Three Little Maids,” “A More Humane Mikado” and “A Wand’ring Minstrel, I.” Get ready to swing, it’s going to be the HOTTEST show in town this summer! Stage directed by Jenna Tamisiea. Christian Elser conducts the GLOW Jazz Orchestra. Performed the Peace Center for the Performing Arts Gunter Theatre 101 W Broad St Greenville, SC 29601
