The 2010 New Play Festival Hatches Next week at Centre Stage

Now in its eighth year, Centre Stage will present its New Play Festival, featuring four finalists selected from submissions of over 200 works. From October 18th through the 22nd, these plays will be presented as staged readings that are free and open to the public. Each performance will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by an in-depth discussion of the work (audience feedback is encouraged after each reading), led by festival chairman, Dr. Brian Haimbach and playwright-in-residence, Deborah Brevoort. On Friday, October 22, Centre Stage will present the latest work in development by Ms. Brevoort, The Poetry of Pizza. At the conclusion of the Festival, one play will be selected based on feedback and evaluations from the audience, as well as the playwright-in-residence and the Festival committee. The play selected as the most outstanding during the festival will be awarded a full production January 13-22, 2011 at Centre Stage. The schedule for the 2010 New Play Festival is as follows:

Monday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m.
A Strange Disappearance of Bees by Elena Hartwell
Spanning thirty years through an interweaving of the past and present, this powerful character study examines the complexity of human relationships, the unfolding disaster of disappearing bees, and the nature of love.

Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
Faith by James McLindon
All young Simon wants for Christmas is the stigmata and to be God's prophet, and if prayer and sacrifice have anything to do with it, Simon is well on his way.

Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
Dreams of Angels by Robert E. Jamison
Set against the backdrop of the turbulent 1960's, a young radical journeys down the road of self discovery amidst the Vietnam War, hippie culture, and the sexual revolution.

Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7:00 p.m.
Identity Crisis by Peter Snoad
It's an unpublished phenomenon sweeping the country: White people are turning Black. On the night before his wedding, Alan Guthrie discovers that it's about to happen to him.

Friday, Oct. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
The Poetry of Pizza by Deborah Brevoort
Professor Sarah Middleton arrives in Denmark to teach at the University of Copenhagen, only to find her life irrevocably thrown off course when she stops by the Vermundsgade Pizzeria one night for a pizza, setting in motion a rash of culinary courtships and a chaotic comedy of errors.
