South Bend Civic Theatre Announces Summer Camps

Youth from kindergarten to high school will have opportunities to explore the magic of making theatre. Taught by experienced and enthusiastic instructors, these camps will give kids the skills in acting, musical theatre, improv, and more fun subjects. Choose from week-long day camps or two week performance camps with a chance to put on a full show at the end!

Many studies have shown the importance of arts education in shaping skills needed for successful child development. At South Bend Civic Theatre, we are committed to giving community children top flight theatre classes designed to teach skills and having fun while learning.

Classes begin the week of June 10, 2012. All camps K-3 will be held at the 1st United Methodist Church located at 333 N. Main St. Enter the side door off of Madison and go down to the basement. All camps 7-12 will be held in South Bend Civic Theatre's Warner Studio Theatre, 403 N. Main Street, South Bend.

10% discounts will be given for registering for a second class during the session and for registering more than one child.

Magic in Me (in the AM)

Summer 2013

K thru 3rd grade

Do-Nothing Dale appears to be a wizard in name only. Dale sets out on a journey to find his/her own "little bit of magic" and along the way encounter many new people including Marilyn Melody, Wonder Wanda, Magnificent Mervin and more. Join us in this week long journey to find your own "magic"! You get to show off your musical on the last day of camp!

Wild Things (in the PM)

It's a Jungle Out There! King Leo is a victim of the corporate jungle! He has money, power, and fame, but he still has not found happiness. His trusty servants, Spot and Stripes begin a quest for the key to happiness. Do the monkeys have or the hyenas? Perhaps the secret lies with the elephants. On the last day of camp parents get to come to the jungle and figure out who has the answer in this mini musical!

Choose - June 10th thru 14th OR July 15th thru 19th

How to be a Pirate (in the AM)

Well Shiver Me Timbers - always wanted to sail the 7 seas? Have a parrot on your shoulder and a patch on your eye? Looking for a BIG adventure? If the answer is yes then listen up buckaroo - you need to get on board the pirate ship and help us find the buried treasure! On the last day of camp your will welcome your parents aboard the Black Pearl to join in the adventure!

Bebop with Aesop (in the PM)

Sing along as we act out the stories of An Aesop Adventure, Kindness Is Contagious (Lion and Mouse), The Lazy Bug Blues (Ant and Grasshopper), Nobody Believes a Liar (Boy Who Cried Wolf), Try and Try Again (Crow and Pitcher), One Step at a Time (Tortoise and Hare), and Simple Pleasures (Town and Country Mice). You get to share your musical adventure with mom and dad on the last day of camp!

Seuss O Rama (in the AM)

Oh the thinks we will think this week on the fantastical, magical, extravaganza of our Seuss adventure! Would we could we in a boat? Would we could we on a float? Join in the fun as we build our very own party hat and Go Dog Go! We will sing and dance our way through the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss! And on the last day of camp your family gets to come to the land of Seuss and experience your thinks! Puppet Pizzazz (in the PM)

From sock puppets to Sesame Street each child will build 3 to 5 puppets of their very own! We will create our very own puppet world, write our very own puppet plays and perform them. Maybe even Pinocchio will show up! And on the last day your parents can join in the puppet making fun!!

Super Heroes Unite (in the AM)

Big City is a happy peaceful place normally. But when the citizens of Big City are in trouble you can count on the world's first vegetable crime fighter! Look up in the sky! It's a really big pigeon. It's an optical illusion. No, it's a...a...potato? Yes it is Captain Potato - join us in Big City and help us fight crime where we can all be heroes! Last day of camp we invite moms and dads to come to the Big City and see us "save the day" Sea Monsters (in the PM)

The ocean floor is filled with the rarest of creatures, but none are as rare as gnarbles. Their fins are small, their tails are floppy, and they have never strayed far from their homes...until now.
JOURNEY of the NOBLE GNARBLE is a story of a little gnarble with a big dream, who tries to make it past doubting blyfish, sneaky subbalubbles, and hungry plinks on his way to the surface of the sea. This mini musical is bound to delight yours moms and dads on the last day of camp!

4th thru 6th grades Disney Movie Magic Performance Camp -

June 10th thru 21st (weekdays only) 10AM to 4PM - performance on the 21st
Cost $400
You'll sing, you'll dance and you'll act! Featuring songs from The Lion King, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Toy Story and Hercules this two week camp will feature scenes and songs from these famous Disney movies! We will create our sets, make our costumes and put on the show in two weeks for family and friends!

Improv Craze June 24th - 28th from 9:30 to 12:30
Cost: $125
"wonderful, exciting, stressful, scary, reckless, daring" - there are a lots of ways to feel about the experience of stepping on stage with no idea of what you're going to say, or what's going to happen. No matter if this is your first experience with improv or you've been around the block a time or two, you will have a blast! This is an import skill to master for any actor!

Midsummer Night Dream - scene work - 9:30 to 12:30
Beating up Bill - Stage Combat - 1:30 to 4:30
Take either AM or PM - $125
Stay the whole day $240
"All the world's a stage..." That's what the Bard penned and we will guide you as you learn to take the mystery out of the language and breathe magic and life into the characters of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. Then join your comrades as you go to ND to see the Young Company's performance of The Comedy of Errors!

Acting Intensive July 29th - Aug 2nd from 9:30 to 12:30
Cost $125
We will engage and stretch the voice, body and mind through a fast-paced process of theatre games, exercises and scene work. You will learn fundamentals of stage acting: how to embody a character who is struggling to overcome obstacles and achieve an objective by using a variety of tactics including script analysis. Every actor will leave with an audition monologue ready to go!

Musical Theatre Jam Aug 5th - Aug 9th from 9:30 to 12:30
Cost $125
If you just can't get enough singing and dancing then this camp is for you. Celebrate musical theater with hits from Hairspray, The Music Man, The King and I, Wicked, Rent, Grease and a medley of George M. Cohan favorites. Actors will work on breathing and vocal techniques along with basic movements.

7th thru 12th grades

Improv Craze

July 15th thru 26th (weekdays only) 10AM to 4PM with a performance on the 26th
Cost $400
Featuring the international pop hit Day by Day, "Godspell" is one of the biggest Broadway successes of all time! Drawing from various theatrical traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, this is a unique and groundbreaking show, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love. GODSPELL JR. is a true ensemble production with many featured roles. And on July 26th you will put on the whole show for family and friends!
