Opera Africa’s first production of 2012, sponsored by the NLDTF, will be a sparkling celebratory affair. Africa’s most dynamic opera company is rolling out the red carpet to present a glittering tribute to everyone who made a contribution to the growth and wealth of this independent living artistic organisation over the past 18 years. This production is an operatic diptych like you’ve never experienced before. The first half, “Bravo Opera Africa – A Vocal Triumph,” will be a showcase of extracts from the company’s most memorable productions, including Princess Magogo, Aïda, Carmen, Faust, The Magic Flute and La Traviata. The stage director for this gala event will be Cape Town’s Angelo Gobbato whose Opera Africa debut, The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, is still a talking point nearly six months after it was presented. Opera Africa invited the crème de la crème of our singers to participate in this historic event, which will also include choruses and ensemble pieces.

To end this glittering celebration and as a fitting climax to 18 years operatic innovation in South Africa, Opera Africa will present the World premiere of the new Zulu work, Ziyankomo. Following the internationally renowned, Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu, Opera Africa has commissioned this new opera, composed by Phelelani Mnomiya, from a libretto written by the celebrated Zulu poet, Prof. Themba Msimang and adapted for the opera stage by Themi Venturas who also directs. This charming tale of illicit love in a corrupt Zulu court is being presented for the first time by a hand picked ensemble cast of 20 of the best young South African singers led by Kelebogile Boikanyo, who recently won the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year Award for Music. The cast also includes the South African, Fikile Mvinjelwa, currently attached to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Given Nkosi, who has completed several seasons in Italy and Aubrey Lodewyk, a longstanding favourate with the Gauteng audiences. In both halves of the evening the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by the renowned American maestro Timothy Myers.
