Clarita De Gennaro Led Thoughts and Prayers in Fringe Festival Run at The Chain Theatre
The Argentinian actress took on a central role in a new international production examining the aftermath of gun violence through the lens of Antigone
In a staging that brought classical structure into urgent contemporary focus, Argentine actress Clarita De Gennaro led the cast of Thoughts and Prayers, a theatrical work inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone. Presented as part of the Fringe Festival, the production ran on the Main Stage at The Chain Theatre in New York, with performances held on April 13 and April 18, both also available via livestream worldwide.
De Gennaro assumed the central role of Amanda, an Argentine exchange student navigating the aftermath of a school shooting. The play situated its narrative not in the moment of violence itself, but in its emotional and societal reverberations—asking what follows survival, and how individuals and communities attempt to reassemble a sense of normalcy after profound disruption.

Drawing on the thematic and structural foundations of Greek tragedy, Thoughts and Prayers unfolded in three acts and incorporated character names and moral tensions reminiscent of Antigone. The work examined questions of responsibility, grief, and collective memory, reframing ancient dramatic concerns within a distinctly modern American context.

For De Gennaro, the role represented both a creative and cultural convergence. A longstanding admirer of Antigone, she approached the material with a focus on its enduring relevance. Her portrayal anchored a production that brought together an international ensemble of performers, each taking on multiple roles within a fluid staging that emphasized physicality and transformation.
The production featured eight actors and employed a minimalist scenic design, relying on movement and ensemble-driven storytelling to shift between perspectives, including members of the press and the surrounding community. This multiplicity of voices reinforced the play’s central inquiry into how narratives are constructed in the wake of tragedy.

The Fringe Festival, originally founded in Edinburgh and now presented in cities worldwide, continued to serve as a platform for emerging and established artists working across disciplines. The inclusion of Thoughts and Prayers in its Main Stage programming underscored the production’s scope and ambition.
Beyond her work as a performer, De Gennaro is also a co-founder of Reacting, a New York–based production company established in 2025 alongside fellow artists. The company has already developed a range of projects, including Prudence and multiple editions of Short Play Series, presented at Caveat NYC. Its programming has focused on new writing and collaborative performance formats, with an emphasis on contemporary themes and international perspectives.

With Thoughts and Prayers, De Gennaro continued to expand a body of work defined by both artistic range and thematic rigor, bringing a classical sensibility to stories rooted in present-day realities.
