The seventh kykNET Silwerskermfees closed last night in Cape Town, but as Karen Meiring confirmed from the stage, it certainly will not be the last one. The winners of this year's festival were announced at a gala event hosted by Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp and Ivan Botha at The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay.

Short films were honoured with awards in 12-minute and 24-minute categories. For 12-minute films, Harold Holscher cracked the nod for Best Director, with VERSNEL winning Dian Wys an award for Best Script as well as being named Best Short Film. For 24-minute films, Nico Scheepers was named Best Director for DIE MAAN VAL BEWUSTELOOS, with SOLDAAT winning Amy Jephta an award for Best Script and Best Short Film. The winners also included Johan Prinsloo (Best Editing for SKOON), Carel Nel (Best Actor for SLAAF) and June van Merch (Best Actress for VOSSIE VERGAS HOMSELF).

The winning feature film, VASELINETJIE, took home only a single award for Best Film. Other feature film award-winners included VUIL WASGOED (Best Director for Morné du Toit Best Actor for Bennie Fourie, Janno Muller and Benjamin Willem for Best Sound Design and Original Music, Best Editing for Quinn Lubbe and Best Production Design for Merishen Wessels), WONDERLUS (Best Script for Johan Cronje, Best Actress for Lea Vivier and Best Supporting Actor for Beer Adriaanse), RAAISELKIND (Best Supporting Actress for June van Merch) and MEERKAT MAANTUIG (Best Cinematography for Willie Nel).
