MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL Sets Southeast Asian Premiere in Singapore

Singapore—The hit Broadway musical, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” will make its Southeast Asian debut at Singapore’s Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, in February 2027.

This film-to-stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s acclaimed 2001 movie is part of a global tour. It features over 70 songs, from Offenbach’s classics to Lady Gaga’s greatest hits, making it a “mash-up musical” rather than a traditional jukebox musical. Justine Levine, music supervisor, orchestrator, and arranger, remixed and mashed up the tracks to create a unique pop score rooted in character-driven storytelling.

The musical takes audiences to the bohemian world of 1899 France through lavish stage design and choreography—depicting a world of “eye-popping excesses” and “indulgent beauty.”

Its original Broadway production in 2019 won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has been performed to over 12 million theatergoers worldwide.

The musical also won Best Costume Design at the Olivier Awards; five Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Scenic Design; and two Drama League Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical. 

Its original cast recording, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Cast Album chart, was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Its story, like the film, follows Christian, a lovesick American writer, and Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub, inspired by a real-life Parisian cabaret. Their romance is challenged by Harold Zidler, the club’s host, and the Duke of Monroth, who is obsessed with Satine.

Tony Award-winning director Alex Timbers directs this production, alongside John Logan, book writer; Sonya Tayeh, choreographer; Derek McLane, set designer; and Catherine Zuber, Costume Designer. 

Carmen Pavlovic and Gerry Ryan OAM produce it for Global Creatures (Australia), Bill Damaschke, and Nick Grace Management (world tour management).
