Juke box musicals are stage theatrical presentations in which a majority of the compositions were written before the presentation was conceived, rather than being original music conceived for that show.  They tend to be long on songs and short on a well-conceived plot.

Winter Opera continues it’s seventeenth season with another iconic operetta—Victor Herbert’s Naughty Marietta.  This lovely old show premiered in 1910. It was produced by the first Oscar Hammerstein (the grandfather of you-know-who).  In 1935 a movie version was made—with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.

The Blind Cupid Shakespeare Company’s First In-Person Production Is a Phenomenal Success

To celebrate their five year anniversary, TURN TO FLESH PRODUCTIONS (TTF) is celebrating with FOUR new verse plays this October: a developmental production of The Other, Other Woman, and a staged reading of the entire Love and Death Trilogy: Persephone Rises, The Seduction of Adonis and Cupid and Psyche, all written and directed by foundress and playwright, Emily C. 'CUPID AND PSYCHE' is a vibrant, vivacious retelling of the Greek myth. The book sparkles with sly wit as Venus (with the aid of Mercury, as himself and a cast of thousands!) tells the tale of her thwarted efforts to come between her son Cupid and the bright and beautiful Psyche, a mere mortal. The songs are by turns laugh-out-loud funny and achingly romantic, and the classical tale shines anew, making for a luminous, magical musical.

Chance Theater is set to present its 14th annual production of the irreverent, raunchy and pitch-black dark holiday satire... The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. Written by Jeff Goode, directed by Resident Artist James McHale. The Eight: Reindeer Monologues will perform December 8 through December 23 on the Fyda-Mar Stage at Chance Theater @ Bette Aitken theater arts Center.

Folger Theatre concludes its very successful 25th anniversary season this spring with Shakespeare's gripping tragedy Timon of Athens. Directed by Robert Richmond (Othello, Henry V, Richard III), this rarely produced satire examining wealth, false friendships, and the abuse of generosity features Helen Hayes Award-winner Ian Merrill Peakes (Macbeth, Othello, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead) in the title role. Move over cupid! The Chicago League of Lady Arm Wrestlers (CLLAW) will have your hearts pumping this Valentine's Day Weekend at CLLAW XXVI: Battle of the CLLAWentines on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Logan Square Auditorium, 2539 N. Kedzie Ave. in Chicago. CLLAW's 26th benefit match will feature Chicago's biggest, baddest lady-identified arm wrestlers, musical entertainment by the Jacob Horn Trio and a cash bar. Doors open at 9 pm with the first match beginning at 9:30 pm. ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE, now on stage at Actors' Summit, is a well formed musical review in which a Patsy Cline-imitator wails away Cline's signature songs, including 'Walkin' After Midnight,' 'I Fall to Pieces,' 'She's Got You,' 'Anytime,' 'Stupid Cupid,' 'Lovesick Blues, 'Faded Love,' and 'Crazy.' The songs are interspersed with comments by a Cline fan and Cline, 'herself.'

Friar Neil Sedaka, wife Leba and daughter Dara were in the Frank Sinatra Room of the Friars Club last night to attend a Tribute Show to Connie Francis and Neil Sedaka. Jenna Esposito and Jim Van Slyke performed the hit songs of Connie & Neil and the show was produced by Jeff Leibowitz, Laura Slutsky and Jenna. Friar Bill Boggs hosted. A special Tribute Menu was presented by Friars Chef Anatoly Veksler. It consisted of "Stupid Cupid Vegetables, Mama's Potato Crusted Brook Trout, Roasted Loin of Veal Is Hard To Do, Artichoke & Peppers On Your Collar Chicken Breast and Where The Chocoholics Are Pyramid." Connie Francis was present via a wonderful video message. An emotional highlight of the evening was when Neil was "coaxed" to take the piano bench. He sang a song he wrote for his cousin who recently passed away..Eydie Gorme.

Cupid's got nothing on these gals! Spend Valentine's Day Weekend with the ladies of CLLAW! The Chicago League of Lady Arm Wrestlers are flexing their forearms once again at CLLAW XV on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at their super colossal new venue, the Logan Square Auditorium, 2539 N. Kedzie Ave. in Chicago. Brought to you by Sideshow Theatre Company, CLLAW's 15th match will feature fearsome lady arm wrestlers decked out in over-the-top outfits, an open bar, shady referees and audience participation all wrapped into one wild, crazy, theatrical event.
