Welcome to 'Cabaret Corner', a series devoted to having meaningful conversations with change-making cabaret artists.
This episode of Broadway Rewind has BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge dropping by Kleinfeld Bridal to meet the cast of one of Ridge's favorite musicals, A Catered Affair, which featured a book by Harvey Fierstein and a beautiful score by John Bucchino. The musical welcomed back to Broadway Faith Prince and Harvey Fierstein, and the guests were treated to a number from the show by co-stars Leslie Kritzer and Matt Cavanaugh. Fierstein told Ridge, 'The whole experience has been joyful. You bring in these actors who have so easily taken over these roles. Between you and me, you know when you have a show that has a breakout performance, it's unbelievable. We've got three in the show. You've got Faith Prince, who is playing a role she was born to play. No one has seen her do anything like this. Tom Wopat, who has never created a role on Broadway, he has only done revivals, so you are going to see Tom do something he has never done before. Then, Leslie Kritzer, everyone thinks of her as the funny girl, who stole Legally Blonde, and she is just heartbreaking in this.'
KINKY BOOTS book-writer Harvey Fierstein was recently challenged to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by KINKY BOOTS composer/lyricist Cyndi Lauper. Not surprisingly, he received a cold surprise when trying to respectfully decline.
Happy Birthday Tom Wopat! Wopat first appeared on the Broadway stage as a replacement in the 1977 musical I Love My Wife, as 'Wally'. He then appeared as a replacement in the stage musicals City of Angels, and Guys and Dolls. He finally appeared in the opening cast of the 1999 revival of Annie Get Your Gun opposite Bernadette Peters, Susan Lucci and Crystal Bernard, who played Annie Oakley. In 2008, Wopat starred on Broadway as the father in the musical A Catered Affair, and received his second Tony nomination for that performance. Wopat recently originated the role of Frank Abignale, Sr. in the musical Catch Me if You Can.
BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge was thrilled to sit down and speak with nearly all of this year's Tony Award nominees at the official Tony Brunch on May 2, 2012, and we will be bringing you special coverage on all of them throughout the awards season. Today we bring you Harvey Fierstein, nominee for Best Book of a Musical for Newsies.
Today in 2008, A Catered Affair opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre, where it ran for 116 performances. It is based on both the 1956 film The Catered Affair written by Gore Vidal and the original 1955 teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky, set in 1953 in the Bronx. John Doyle directed the production, which starred Fierstein, Faith Prince and Tom Wopat.
John Doyle's latest project, TEN CENTS A DANCE, will play August 11-28 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. TEN CENTS A DANCE, conceived and directed by John Doyle, features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart.
