Kline won a scholarship to the Juilliard School’s drama division in 1970. In 1972, he co-founded the City Center Acting Company (now The Acting Company), touring nationally in classical repertory productions and The Robber Bridegroom. He appeared on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow (1976) and returned to the stage in Dance on a Country Grave (1977). He won his first Tony Award for On the Twentieth Century (1978) and a second Tony for The Pirates of Penzance (1980), later reprising the role in the film version (1983).
